MPES Media Minute
April 2017
A note from Mrs. Hayden
Spring has sprung!
The end of the year is approaching faster that I thought and I wanted to be sure I passed along a few things in this (very) short month.
Feel free to interrupt me anytime to find out how these sessions could help you in the classroom!
MPES Reads!
This contest will continue during Intercession and Spring Break so make sure reading logs go home with your students.
The contest concludes May 26th and we are working towards a total reading goal of 100,000 (or more) minutes.
Literacy, Economics, and History, Oh my!
2015 History and Social Studies revisions (Skills for Grades 4-6 - 1.h) The student will demonstrate skills for historical thinking, geographical analysis, economic decision making, and responsible citizenship by: using a decision-making model to make informed decisions.
Within the Economics strand for grades K-3 the following concepts are embedded:
Work
Income/Money
Consume/Consumer
Produce/Producer
Natural/Human/Capital Resources
Barter/Trade
Specialization
Students should be familiar with these concepts when they reach the upper elementary grades. The following resource links each VS SOLs to economic lessons that teach the above concepts. http://vcee.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/VirginiaStudies-With-Lessons-9-09.pdf
I can help you find books here at the MPES Library that link with economic concepts our students need to know. Stop by and see me!
And a Contest!!!
The Virginia Council on Economic Education has a poster contest every year. Students are invited to draw a poster of an economic concept (see above list) and submit it. If their poster is picked, it is printed and distributed to schools across the Commonwealth. Please pass this contest information to your students and encourage them to participate. I will be happy to create a notice to go home after Spring Break. The deadline for this year's contest is May 15th.
Please see Mrs. Hayden if you have any questions or want more information.
Library End-of-the-Year Update
Mrs. Woo and I kindly ask you to return materials you are not using as soon as you are done with them. This helps us get the Library prepped for the summer and begin our inventory process. I will be sending out reminder emails about some of the items in the update so you are kept in the loop.
Just because it's at the bottom, doesn't mean it's not important
Look for a treat in your mailboxes when we return for Spring Break as a thank you for being an amazing staff! If I can help you in any way during the rest of the year, or you have ideas for me for next year, let me know!
