MES School Counseling Newsletter
November
Our classroom topics for this month are all centered around careers. Here are some suggestions for you to follow up with at your leisure.
- The next time you color with your child draw and talk about one of the responsibilities you both do around your house and why it is important.
1st Grade- Careers and Interests around my school
-
Take a few minutes with your student and look through the site: https://www.careerkids.com/pages/?p=49349131-be39-4867-8c67-bd996428760e. Talk to them about what they might want to be when they grow up and explore some of those careers.
2nd Grade- Things I like to do
- Talk with your child at home about the different things he or she likes to do. Together come up with as many different jobs as you can that have a part in what they are interested in. You'll be surprised how many different jobs need to help create a modern video game!
-
In this lesson, students thought about their "soft skills". Read here about the importance of soft skills: http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2015/12/17/459873281/learning-soft-skills-in-childhood-can-prevent-harder-problems-later. A great place to start with your student is talking about Midway's 21st Century Skills.
- Talk to you kids about all the different jobs you have had and how you ended up at your current job. Discuss what parts you particularly like about your job and how you figured out what you wanted to do.
5th Grade- Life Events
-
In this lesson, students thought through pass life events and possible future life events. In thinking about the possible future life events, students thought about the steps to reach those milestone. Ask your student about SMART goals (October's lesson) and how they can use a SMART goal to help them plan for future life events.
