Sustainability
Fishing
What is sustainability?
Sustainability is using just what we need in order to ensure there is enough left for future generations. In this case fisheries are taking way more than what is needed, and we need to find more sustainable methods in order to just take what we need, so the fish levels remain what they are today.
Atlantic Cod Fishing.
Atlantic Cod are just one of many examples of why we need to find more sustainable methods. As you can see Atlantic Cod levels have dropped at least 95% from 1970. This is what caused a moratorium in Canada in 1992 as an attempt to try and ensure a recovery in levels. As you can see Atlantic cod have not been able to recover from over-fishing.
Is aquaculture sustainable?
Aquaculture is sustainable as long as the operations follow certain guidelines. Some examples include.
-does not use wild caught juveniles.
-does not result in negative effects in local wildlife
-supports the long-term economic and social well-being of local communities.
It also must be clear that aquaculture is not a solution to over fishing, but instead an alternative of fishing.
