Aug. '23: Communication for our wonderful Blackhawk families

Big picture

Thank you for attending the Welcome Back Flagpole Assembly!

This year we started our school year with a Community Flagpole Assembly on the first day. Families and students gathered in the center courtyard to play games, show their spirit and review our HAWK expectations. Thank you to our parents and guardians who were able to attend and join in on the fun. What a great way to start the school year!

Who's ready to Hula?!🌺

Our fantastic Parent Teacher Organization is planning a Family Luau for August 17th from 5:30-7:00pm. Bring the whole family and limbo the night away! We'll have a DJ (our very own Ms. Rodriguez from Music and Band)and fun family games.

Come hungry because Kona Delight and Wave Beach Cafe will be serving up authentic mixed plate meals. If you're looking for something sweet, grab a shave ice from Kona Ice! 10% of all sales will be donated to the PTO.

We hope to see everyone in their favorite Hawaiian-themed attire!

This is a free event for all families.

PTO Membership is highly encouraged. 😁

Have you met our newest team members?

We are so excited to welcome our new staff to the Desert Mountain family!

Attendance is Crucial to Student Success!

Did you know that last year Desert Mountain decreased student truancy rates by 10% (from 31% to 21%)? That means more students were in the classrooms more often, learning more content! Let's decrease that rate by another 10% this school year!

To partner with the school, we encourage all families to schedule regular dentist and doctor's visits outside of the school day. We understand that occasionally students will miss school, and when they do, please contact the Attendance Line at 623-445-3590 to report their absence. Mrs. Anh Tran will review all attendance calls and report absences accordingly. She may also be reached at 623-445-3506 if you need assistance.

If you need to CHANGE THE END OF DAY TRANSPORTATION, you must contact the front office prior to 2:30pm M-Th and 1:00pm on Early Release Fridays. No changes will be honored beyond these times.

*Missed graded student assignments will either be available in Canvas or provided by the teacher depending on the grade level.

Nurse Lisa is here to help!

Has something changed with your child's health?

Does your child need to take medication at school?

Please contact Nurse Lisa to learn what supports may be available to your student.

*All medication from home must be administered by a school nurse or designated staff member. Medications are not provided by the school. Please do not send medication to campus with your student.

Mrs. Julie Tite, K-8 Behavioral Counselor at Desert Mountain School

We are so excited that ADE has awarded Desert Mountain School with a grant funded, full-time behavioral health counselor for the 2023-24 school year. This year Mrs. Julie Tite will be full-time on the DMS campus to support student learning and behavior. She will be in all classrooms supporting instruction through mini behavior lessons, offering small groups for specialized behavior skills, and (with parent permission) meeting with students to support continued growth and behavioral improvement. If you would like to schedule time with Mrs. Tite to learn about her services or request support for your student, please contact the DMS front office for more information.

6th-8th Grade Fall Sports: Baseball and Softball

DMS fall sports will be starting soon. Tryouts for baseball and softball will be the week of August 14th from 3:00-5:00. To try out for any DMS sport you will have to have a physical from a doctor and have Register My Athlete (RMA) completed and submitted for me to approve. Physicals are good for 1 calendar year. You can scan or take a picture of the documents to upload them to RMA. All parts of Register My Athlete have to be submitted and approved to be able to tryout. Everything you need is on our athletic website under the RMA and physical information page. Both links are below. If you have already completed RMA this year, you don’t need to do it again. Please make sure that you’ve checked baseball or softball on RMA.

We are continuing to allow 6th graders to participate in athletics, this is to help with our low numbers and make sure that we can field all of our teams. 6th graders can’t make the team over a 7th or 8th grader, but if we have low numbers they will have the opportunity to make the team and contribute.

If you have any questions you can contact Mr. Booth at dan.booth@dvusd.org.

Please Support The Desert Mountain PTO

Desert Mountain PTO is inviting all families to join the team! This year we are hosting our first membership drive since 2018. We need your support! To accommodate all families, we have two membership options this year.

  • The "No Fuss" membership for $15: I do not plan on volunteering but I'll be attending PTO events. I'd also like to vote on how fundraising dollars are spent.
  • The "Volunteer Membership" for $10: I plan to volunteer at a PTO event and I'd also like to vote in how dollars are spent.
