One of the tasks I undertook when I became Assistant Superintendent was to oversee the creation of a guaranteed and viable curriculum for the students and teachers of Clinton. ELA is almost complete, although it will continue to be vetted by the ELA teachers of the district. Math teachers began the process on February 16th. Science teachers will be begin the process of prioritizing standards during the next district PD day. The remaining content areas, as well as non-content areas, will begin during the next school year. So, what is a guaranteed and viable curriculum and why is it important?
Guaranteed Curriculum
A guaranteed curriculum means specific content is certain to be taught in specific courses and at specific grade levels, regardless of the teacher to whom a student is assigned. A guaranteed curriculum is based on the state standards which is prioritized by the teachers teaching the curriculum.
Viable Curriculum
A viable curriculum indicates that there is enough instructional time available to actually teach the content identified as guaranteed. This includes the necessity of narrowing the standards AND adequate time for teachers to collaborate about the curriculum and the instructional framework to deliver it.
If you wish to learn more about the process we are using in Clinton you can read Larry Ainsworth's book, Rigorous Curriculum Design: How to Create Curricular Units of Study that Align Standards, Instruction, and Assessment

Reminder: Health screenings have been rescheduled for Monday, March 12th. Thank you to those that are participating! Remember, if enough of our employees participate, we will earn a district reward! There are a few times available at the high school between 9am-10:30am and just two slots available at CTS; one at 9:15am and one at 9:30am. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.
I need to do a little research on benefits our district offers in regards to worksite products. The term worksite products refer to those voluntary insurance policies you can choose to elect with AFLAC: accident, cancer, short-term disability, etc. What I need from you guys is feedback regarding your experience with AFLAC and how you feel about the policies you might currently have. Do you feel you get good customer service from AFLAC? Are you happy with timeliness of payout of benefits when claims are filed? Do you feel 100% insured by the product? Are you interested in seeing what is out there besides AFLAC products? Please email me if you would like to provide feedback.
Have a great weekend!
Emily

It's a Great Day to be a Cardinal
Submitted by: Jarrod Boyles, CIS Principal
As the weather begins to warm up and the early signs of Spring slowly start to appear, it reminds me of all the wonderful things that begin to take shape around our district.
An annual tradition that occurs each spring at Clinton Intermediate School is the celebration of our 5th grade students' successful completion of Cardinal Power. Cardinal Power is a comprehensive science-based drug education program in which the Clinton School District resource officer, Mark Glatfelter, spends 13 weeks rotating through each 5th grade classroom to discuss the following information with students.
1. How the brain works, and how drugs affect the brain
2. Making wise decisions in any risky situation
3. Rights and responsibilities
4. Consequences of our actions
5. Self-esteem and how to help control it
6. Media and how they try to influence us
7. Positive Alternatives Activities and being successful in school and life
8. Dealing with Stress
9. Conflict resolution
10. Positive Mentors
11. Choosing your friends
Students are required to complete an essay at the completion of the course describing lessons that they learned. A winning essay will be selected by the 5th grade teachers and that student has the opportunity to read his or her essay during the graduation.
Upon completion of the course, each 5th grade student will participate in a formal graduation ceremony with several special guests from the community in attendance. Parents and friends are also invited to attend the ceremony which will be held on March 8th at 5:30 pm in the CIS gymnasium.
