Birthday Treats
Families are allowed to send birthday treats if they want to do so, as long as they come from our list of treats that contain none of the major allergens.
Thank you for understanding that all classroom treats must come from this list, because we do not have the staff capacity to check for allergens that could threaten the health of some students.
Please bring birthday treats ahead of time (two hours after the start of school, at the latest).

Classroom Safety
Health Guidelines For Students and Staff
If a student or a staff member is sick, it is more important than ever that they stay home. Please help us keep our community safe by being cautious and staying away, even if you think an illness could be allergies. The nurse at your school will be happy to help you talk through your symptoms.
Students and staff should screen for these symptoms each day:
- Fever or chills According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a fever is 100.4 F or greater.
- Cough
- Rash
- Sore throat
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Diarrhea
- Nausea or vomiting
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Muscle or body aches
Health Room Safety
- hand washing, use of sanitizer, use of gloves
- visitors will wash their hands upon entering and exiting the health room
- proper PPE will be worn if necessary
- cots, chairs, and other surfaces will be cleaned and disinfected between staff/student visits and throughout the day as needed
- custodial staff will clean and disinfect as part of their regular cleaning routine
Isolations and Quarantines
Isolation of Sick People:
- In compliance with the CDC's new guidance, we will require anyone who tests positive for COVID to stay home for five days, beginning on the date of the positive test or on the first day symptoms appeared.
- If the person has no symptoms or their symptoms resolve, they may return after five days. They might need to stay home a little longer if one of their symptoms that resolved was a fever, as they must have had no fever without medication for more than 24 hours to return.
- We will ask them to wear a mask for the next five days after they return, but we will not enforce mask wearing.
Quarantine of Exposed People:
- The CDC also updated quarantine guidance for people who get exposed to someone with COVID.
- People who are fully vaccinated within the last six months or fully vaccinated and boosted do not need to quarantine, but the CDC does recommend they wear a mask for 10 days.
- The CDC recommends people who are not fully vaccinated within the last six months or not fully vaccinated and boosted to quarantine for five days and then wear a mask for another five days.
- The CDC says "If you can’t quarantine you must wear a mask for 10 days. Test on day five if possible. If you develop symptoms get a test and stay home."
- Starting in January, the Kansas City Health Department will take back the contact tracing duties when a Park Hill student or employee has a positive case of COVID-19. We will let families and staff know if there is a positive case in our building. We will also provide a message to families if there is someone with COVID in any of your child’s classrooms. It will be the health departments that will let you know if there needs to be a time of quarantine.
- Students will continue to eat lunch at assigned tables. A seating chart will be created to help with contact tracing if needed for the health department. Students will be spaced out as much as possible.
Masking
- The Park Hill Board of Education approved a mask mandate for all district facilities from January 9 through February 3. The Board will review this again at its January 27 meeting.
- Masks are also required on school buses, in compliance with the federal requirement that currently goes through March 18, 2022.
School Bus Safety
First Student will train drivers about health and safety precautions for COVID-19.
We will open windows when possible.
- Hand Hygiene: We will provide hand sanitizer.
- Physical Distancing: First Student will create assigned seats for students riding the bus, with siblings sitting together when possible. The seat behind the driver will remain empty.
- Cleaning: First Student will disinfect all surfaces on the buses at the end of each route.
- Cohort Groups: When possible, First Student will assign drivers to a single bus and route.
- Masks: We will still require masks on school buses, in compliance with the federal requirement that currently goes through March 18, 2022.
Special Events
We will continue to have musical performances, after school clubs, and a few other after school/evening events. Attendance at these events will be limited. Any after school event will require a safety plan. We will share specific details for each planned event with families.
Visitors and Volunteers
We still need to minimize the number of outside people in our schools, but starting in January, we will start to allow some volunteers. This will include guest speakers, volunteers during the school day who do not have any contact with students, and volunteers for after-school clubs or activities who are never left alone with students. Contact your child’s school/ classroom teacher to see if there are any available volunteer opportunities, which could be up to two hours per week. Volunteers will need to meet our screening requirements.
For now, we cannot allow visits, such as at lunchtime. We will reevaluate these rules again at the end of third quarter.
A Few More Things
Please send a reusable water bottle to school with your child.
Please be patient with us as we navigate through another unusual school year.
Please contact us if you have questions or if your child is struggling.
If your student is directly exposed to someone with COVID you are encouraged to contact the Kansas City Health Department for guidance.
