Scholastic Book Fair: Teacher Preview Event

This month we held our annual Scholastic Book Fair in the media center. Unlike the past, we decided to hold an opening event just for teachers. Our "Teacher Preview" activity was a success on Thursday, March 10, 2016. Teachers visited the event and put their name in for a drawing for one of several $10.00 gift certificates that were available. Congratulations to the winners of the gift certificate: Ms. D. Muhammad, Mr. A. Crooks, Ms. C. Wright, Ms. L. Mines, Ms. J. Edmonson, Ms. J. Huell, and Mr. K. Davis. In addition, for the first time, we will make book fair items available when rising sixth grade parents visit the school for their orientation on Thursday, March 17, 2016. Proceeds from the sale of book fair items will be used to fund media center literacy programs.

Family ELA Night (Literacy Event)

The Family ELA Night event was held on Thursday, March 10, 2016. With over 75 people in attendance, we had a successful reading celebration. A representative from the Main Branch of the Richland County Public Library did an awesome job of presenting events from the library. Parents enjoyed sessions related to SC Ready, South Carolina's statewide assessment for English and Math; Edmodo and Quizizz, online games/assessments; Accelerated Reader, online comprehension assessment for books; and Scholastic Book Fair, to purchase books, games, and crafts. Parents who attended this event had an opportunity to qualify for one of several $5.00 book fair gift certificates that were given out. Students who attended this event with a parent or guardian received 100 points in their ELA class.

Read Around the Planet 2016

A Celebration of "NEA's Read Across America" (Sponsored by Polycom and TWICE)

Dates: February 22 - March 4

This project consisted of classrooms connecting over videoconference to celebrate reading. Each class created their own reading activity, then connected with their partner class to present their reading themed activities to each other. Students also shared information about their school and community. At St. Andrews, five ELA classes had an opportunity to communicate with students in various parts of the country, including Virginia, Texas, Canada, and Pennsylvania. The students were enthusiastic and well-behaved as they shared information about text they were reading, as well as South Carolina facts.

DLE Update: DLE, AUP, and VPNs

On Friday, March 4, Ms. Wylie presented information about DLE, AUP, and VPNs to teachers at St. Andrews Middle School. Participants received a quick course in identifying VPNs and how students are using them to access inappropriate sites. In addition, a mass device check was held and yielded over 15 devices that contained VPNs. Thank you to teachers who have been assisting us by diligently monitoring students to stop the use of noneducational sites in the classroom.
