Lockdown Exercise tomorrow

As part of keeping our school safe, we need to be able to respond safely and quickly to a range of emergency situations.

As part of maintaining our emergency procedures in our school, we will be conducting a lockdown exercise on Wednesday 30 November.

During the exercise you will receive an APP notification from the school, so it is important that

your emergency contact details are up to date and correct. The notification will emphasise that this is an exercise/practice and will explain that all updated information will then be posted on the school website.

In a genuine incident, should you become aware of a lockdown or evacuation at the school, can I please ask that you do not attend the school or phone, as we will not be able to respond. Your presence or contact may make it more difficult for us or the emergency services to manage a situation.

School Fundraiser- Colour Dash Friday

Thank you in anticipation of your support for our Colour Dash this Friday 2 December. The Parents and Whānau group are raising money to upgrade our playgrounds. Thank you to Tracey Robins and her team for all the work they are doing behind the scenes getting ready for a successful event on Friday. We are also very grateful to our sponsors that are listed below.

If weather is inclement, we will hold the Colour Dash next Friday 9 December.

We thank you for your support.

Board Message

2023 School Donations

Each year the Board of Trustees review the donation structure to make sure that donations, while voluntary, are still affordable and at a fair cost for every family.

For 2023, the Board has set the school donation to $100 for the first child and $60 for additional children. This small increase is due to increasing costs for the school, for example, swimming costs have increased as well as bus and transportation costs for class trips. We are committed to providing valuable learning opportunities and experiences for our students and therefore we have to increase the donation for 2023.

School donations are used to help bridge the funding gap and are vitally important to help provide valuable resources and enhance our learning environment. In addition to funding trips and activities for our students, next year’s donations will contribute to funding extra teacher aide hours, classroom furniture, outdoor improvements, digital devices and additional learning support.

Did you know that school donations are a voluntary, tax-deductible payment and you can claim 33.3% of this payment back in your tax return? Here is information about the process of getting a tax rebate for your donation.

There are several different ways that you can make your school donation. Parents or caregivers may also make donations of a different value, which are always gratefully received.

For example:

1. A single full payment of $100 for one child and $60 for additional children

2. A payment per term of $25 for one child and $15 for additional children

3. Fortnightly, weekly or monthly payments (can be arranged with the school office)

4. Some workplaces also offer ‘Workplace Giving’ where you can arrange for the school donation payment to be deducted automatically from your wages or salary, with your workplace calculating all the tax allowances as well.

Internet banking - Please transfer funds to: St Brigid’s Operations Account 12-3041-0341681-00, with your child’s family name as the reference.

When the donation is paid, you will be emailed a receipt from Lynne. School donations for this year and next year paid by 31 March 2023 are eligible for a tax rebate of 33.3% in the current financial year, otherwise donations paid after this date can be claimed the following tax year.

We thank all our school families for their continued support.

Message from our DRS

ADVENT “Come, Lord Jesus!”

Advent is a season of waiting but it comes with hope, faith, joy and peace. Talk to your child about their understanding of Advent.

Classes all have Advent wreaths which are used as we prepare to welcome Christ into our lives.

Thank you St Brigid’s School Orchestra/Choir

I popped into the orchestra/choir practice this week to record a couple of tracks for classes to practice for the End of Year School Mass and, again, was reminded how blessed we are to have staff who give these students such an amazing opportunity and the rest of us the experiences of live music at our school liturgies and Masses. As the end of year nears, it’s a good opportunity to say a huge thanks to you both, Fiona Kearns and Lynne Candiliotis. You are awesome!

The Colour Dash is on this Friday and we can’t wait!!! Hopefully the weather will be nice!

Don’t forget to get your final sponsors this week.

Remember to bring a hat, running shoes, a t-shirt you don’t mind getting coloured, and shorts/pants. A white t-shirt works best for showing off the colours. Please come to school wearing these clothes. The children may get wet so bring spare clothes.

Children should bring in their donation form and money from next Monday 5 December.

Be in to win some great prizes. There is a spot prize for each class, a team prize for the people who make a big effort and a prize for one class. Bring your forms and money to be in the draw. There’s a family Staglands voucher, Queensgate voucher, family Phoenix Football pass, LaserForce voucher and lots more.

Thanks to the following sponsors.

SBS Got Talent

What a wonderful spectacle it was to have our St Brigid’s School tamariki sharing their talents with us at the Johnsonville Community Centre last Friday. We were entertained by such a variety of musicians, dancers, comedians and yoyo acts. All of these participants showed us our school value of māia (courage). It is not easy to perform in front of such a large group.

We were also so grateful to have our parent community join us for this occasion as well.

Thank you to our celebrity judge “Mr Panda” who joined us in celebrating our tamariki.

We also want to acknowledge the Young Christian Leaders who organised this event and Technology Leaders who worked hard to make it flow so well!

Team Toru and Whā Otārikāka Walk

On Monday 5 December Team Toru and Whā are making our annual walk up Otārikāka (Mt Kaukau). We will be leaving school at approximately 10.00am and will walk up to Truscott Park. We will then walk up to the top of Otārikāka and have a snack (weather permitting) before heading back down to have lunch and a play at Truscott Park.

Students do not need to wear their school uniform on this day. They are to wear sensible walking clothes - including walking shoes and be ready to do a walk. Students also need a backpack, sunhat, raincoat, lunch and drink.

We do need help with supervision on this fun day out. If you are able to join us please contact your child’s teacher as soon as possible.

If this event is postponed then we will advise via email and facebook. It will be rescheduled for Wednesday 7 December.

St Brigid’s School Picnic, Waikanae Pool - 12 December

Our annual school picnic will be held on Monday 12 December at the Waikanae Pool, 60 Ngarara Rd, Waikanae, from 10.30am until 1.30pm.

History of our picnic:

The school picnic has been an annual end-of-year event for nearly 30 years and is a wonderful day out for students, families and staff. Waikanae Pool has safe, fenced grounds, beautiful lawns and trees to picnic and play amongst, and a variety of pools to cater for toddlers and swimmers of all levels. They’ve even got a hydro-slide!

How it works:

  • On picnic day our hope is that all our students and as many families as possible travel out to Waikanae to join together with school staff for fun in the sun.

  • We are reliant on families making their own transport arrangements to get to and from the pool - whether in your own car or carpooling with friends.

  • If you have any spare seats in your car and would be happy to take an extra child or two, we would be grateful if you would please email the class teacher so that they can link you up with any other children in the class who require rides.

  • We will also run a sausage sizzle at lunchtime to raise funds for the 2023 Year 8 camp. More details will follow in upcoming newsletters.

All our teachers, as well as pool attendants, will supervise students but pool rules state that children under 8 years of age must be more closely supervised by an adult who is specifically looking out for them.

Costs: (group discount rates)

Child - $3.10

Child under 5 years - $1.80

Adult - $5.00

One adult with an under 5 year old - $1.80

Spectators - free

Hydroslide - $2.50

Swim nappy for under 4’s - $1.50

All Library Books are due back this week

It’s that time of year again. Please hunt around, check your shelves and look under the beds for any missing library books. All books are due back by the end of this week, ready for stock take next week.

Holiday Reading

Traditionally we do not issue books to students for the holidays given it is a long time to keep track of the books particularly for those going on away. However, if you would like your child to issue some library books, please email me library@stbrigids.school.nz confirming you give permission and will return these books in week one of next year and I will arrange this in the final week of school.

Year 8 Camp 2023 Ice Block Fundraiser

The Year 7s are selling lemonade ice blocks on Friday 2 December and 9 December.

The options for ice blocks will be $1 for a small ice block (Junior) and $2 for a large ice block.

These will be sold outside Room 12 from 12:40pm - 1:00pm. Make sure you bring money to school if you want an ice block at lunchtime. Remember it is summer, so an ice block would be especially good to keep cool on a hot summer's day!

Northern Suburbs Citizenship Award

Last Friday JC Historillo was awarded a Northern Suburbs Citizenship Award after being nominated by teachers and students for the positive contribution he makes to our school. He lives and shares our school values of whakapono, māia, kotahitanga and aroha everyday he comes to school. His leadership is an inspiration to us all. We acknowledged him and enjoyed celebrating with him and his whanau on Friday evening when he was presented this award from Wellington Mayor, Tory Whanau.

Congratulations JC!
