PYA LMC
Library News and Info
Smore Newsletter
Periodically, I will try to send out updates on happenings in the PYA Library and some of the tools we have available (both electronic and in print). This newsletter was created using the website Smore.com. Smore is a quick and easy way to send out newsletters or create event posters. The library subscription was purchased through W-FL BOCES School Library Systems.
Database Portal
Recently, the design and delivery of the subscription services, purchased by the district and/or provided by School Library Systems (SLS), have changed. The process has been streamlined. Now, all of these services/tools are accessible through one link and only require one password. To access these tools, go to the PYA Library home page found on the Academy page on the District's site. If you click on the "Link to Databases..." you will be able to select Penn Yan Academy and enter the password "look". You will be able to browse any of the databases. Some recent additions are Flocabulary (purchased by SLS) and Opposing Viewpoints in Context (provided through NOVELNY funds). There are some great resources here...they are definitely worth checking out!
Book Club
This year, the PYA lunch period Book Club is reading books by Teen Book Festival (TBF) Authors. TBF is an annual festival that celebrates the best in YA Lit by bringing best selling authors to Nazareth College. Book Club members will have the opportunity to attend the free May 14 event. Our current book selection is Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews. Next month we will read non-fiction titles by award winning author Steve Sheinkin. For more information visit www.tbflive.org.
Media Library
In addition to our large database collection, Penn Yan is fortunate to participate in the W-FL BOCES Media Library. This service provides teachers and students with access to many resources including; tens of thousands of video clips (Classroom Video on Demand and Learn 360), e-books (OverDrive), and royalty free music (Soundzabound). These resources have been integrated into our database portal.
Library Usage and Information
The library has been very busy with students writing research papers, writing article critiques, creating Piktocharts, and designing presentations using Prezi or Google Slides. To schedule Library or Computer Lab time, click here. Please let Mr. Mumby or Ms. Sands know if you have any tech or resource requests. In the classroom, the old laptops have been replaced with a set of Chromebooks as they are more portable, have a better battery life, and have a minimal log in time. Please take this into consideration if you have students that have started assignments using Office products.
Software and Hardware Requests
Just a reminder that the process for requesting software or hardware for your classroom has been created and is now operational. For more information click here. Click on the form below to begin the process.
