FRIDAY SCIENTISTS
Each Friday a studnet in Mrs. Regh's and Mrs. Calvanese's classrooms perform an experiment. In Mrs. Calvanese's room, a girl performed Watery Stripes. She dropped peppermints into a bowl of water. The colors dissolved into stripes in the water. This happened because as the candy dissolves, it forms sugar water, and sugar water is denser than regular water, so it sinks. The sugar water then spreads outward but doesn't mix in right away. Eventually, however, they will mix. Another student performed an experiment with eggs. She put eggs in a glass with vinegar and water and aded dye. The vinegar softened the egg shell. What was left was the soft tissue that lined the inside of the eggshell and the egg looked like a freshly cracked egg with the yolk and albumen.
In Mrs. Regh's class, a boy took flour, sour cream and shortening and had the students put each item on their fingers. They then submerged their fingers in ice cold water. he scientist wanted to see which material kept their fingers the warmest in the cold water. The shortening worked the best. The scientist then compared the fat that kept their fingers the warmest to the fat layer that animals have to protect them from the cold.
