BCS Special Education Connection

January 2016

Welcome Back!!

I hope your holiday was filled with time for family, food, vegging on the couch, and binging with Netflix. Michelle and I took some time off and both feel refreshed to hit the ground running. On that note, we are providing the information below to update DEC on the most current events/news we have. Feel free to contact DeeDee, Allison, Michelle, or myself anytime with any question or concern. Thanks for all you do!

These are pictures from Oak Elementary’s Functional Skills Class, Adaptive Functional Skills Class, and Pre-school Class Christmas program. Their first time to be on the stage!!

Alignment of TN Special Education Framework with Content Standards

The U.S. Department of Education (USED) issued guidance at http://www2.ed.gov/policy/speced/guid/idea/memosdcltrs/guidance-on-fape-11-17-2015.pdf in an effort to ensure that children with disabilities are held to high expectations and have meaningful access to a state's academic content standards. The new guidance states that an individualized education program (IEP) for an eligible child with a disability under IDEA must be aligned with the state's academic content standards for the grade in which the student is enrolled.

In order to provide clarity on how Tennessee's Special Education Framework aligns with content standards, per the guidance from USED, please see the document at

Portfolio Update

We still have not gotten any additional information from the state regarding portfolios.

The latest information we have says that we should hear something sometime in January.

So, we are planning to continue just as we have been. Portfolios will be due to Central Office by the end of the school day on the following dates:

2nd grade - February 19, 2016

3rd grade and up - February 5, 2016

If we receive any information from the state before that time, we will be sure to pass on the information.
