A Note from Dr. Brown
Greetings Parents and Guardians!
Happy Friday Everyone! I hope you are enjoying this brisk fall weather! Speaking of Fall, please ask your child about the Cub family in the front lobby. It signifies togetherness, which is what Woodward Mill stands for!
It was so nice to see our Woodward Mill family at the first PTA skate night of the year! Thanks for your support. We all had a blast!
Please continue to check our school calendar for updates. Please see Ms. Hardin, PTA President, to volunteer for upcoming events. Bear Scare is right around the corner!
Best Regards and have a great weekend!
Dr. Sonya Brown

No Place For Hate
Woodward Mill ES is a No Place for Hate school! What does this mean? This means that each year, our school seeks to build a safe and inclusive community in which respect and equity are the goals and where each and every student can thrive. We empower students, teachers, administration and family members to take a stand against bias and bullying by incorporating new and existing programs under one powerful message. We send a clear, unified message that all students have a place where they belong.
Last week, our students and staff signed the No Place for Hate Pledge to be displayed in our hallways. If you are in the building, we would for parents to sign the pledge too! Ask at the front desk to sign the pledge and support our school climate. Check out our website for the No Place for Hate Pledge and the Woodward Mill Inclusive and Equitable School Climate Policy Statement.

Character Trait of the Month
Each month, we will focus on a different character trait. The character trait for the month of September is “Responsibility”. Teachers will be looking for students that exhibit this trait during September to be recognized as the “Cub of the Month” with a certificate and free ice cream!
September is Attendance Awareness Month
Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. But, we also know that when students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically. When students are not at school, they are missing valuable instructional time.
Here are some things you as a parent can do to help improve your child’s attendance:
Talk with your child about what happened at school each day. The more interested in school you are, the more they will be!
Set a bedtime and morning routine so that your child is well-rested and ready for school.
Wait to take family trips until school holidays or summer break.

Maybe Something Beautiful by Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell
Mira lives in a gray and hopeless urban community until a muralist arrives and, along with his paints and brushes, brings color, joy, and togetherness to Mira and her neighbors. This empowering story of community engagement might inspire kids to get involved in their own neighborhoods.
