May 24, 2021: A recap of the May 20th meeting
Chiloquin High to get new track
The Klamath County School District Board of Directors has approved a $444,784 contract with FieldTurf USA to replace the track at Chiloquin Junior/Senior High School. The project includes removal and replacement of the existing 20-year-old track, discus ring, asphalt runways, long jump pits, and shot put landing zone. Construction is scheduled to start this summer.
Bargaining contracts approved
The school board approved 2021-22 school year bargaining agreements for classified and certified staff. Included for both groups is a 4% cost-of-living increase and an insurance cap increase. In the classified contract, specific employee groups, including custodians, sweepers, cooks, bus drivers, and paraprofessionals, received an increase in the step-one base wage.
Second teacher added to TAG program
KCSD Superintendent Glen Szymoniak reported that the district will hire a second full-time teacher next fall for its TAG (talented and gifted program), bringing the program back to its staffing levels before 2020 budget cuts. The program will be located at Shasta Elementary School.
Free meal program expanded
The KCSD Board of Directors approved enrolling all KCSD schools, including Great Basin Homeschool and Klamath County Transition Program, in a federal program that reimburses districts in high poverty areas for nutrition services. This will allow KCSD to continue to provide free meals to all students. All KCSD schools have been approved for the program -- USDA Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) -- through the 2024-25 school year. Poverty rates in the district have increased from 45.56% in 2019-20 to 49.70% in 2020-21.
New freezer for district warehouse
The school district will purchase a new freezer for the district warehouse to accommodate an increased need for food storage. The school board approved a contract with Curtis Restaurant Supply for the freezer and a contract with Shaffers Electric LLC for electrical work.
