Today we celebrated our 100th Day of First Grade!!!! We connected our reading, writing, and math objectives to the number 100, and we also celebrated how much the children have learned in 100 days! Be sure to ask your first grade all about it!

Curriculum for the week of February 8th - 12th

Math--This week students will practice making up and writing their own word problems when given a basic number sentence. For example, if I tell the kids 8 + 3 = 11, they might generate the following word problem.... "I have 8 books. My grandma gave me 3 books for my birthday. How many books do I have in all?"

Reading--Visualize while reading

AT HOME READING: Read aloud a book to your child that is not familiar to them, but do not show them the pictures. As you are reading, have children draw pictures of what they imagine the illustrations look like.

Writing--Students will create a story that includes a beginning, middle, and end

Science--Observe, compare and describe components of soil by size, texture, and color.

Valentine Exchange in Class--Friday, February 12th

Big image

We do not have a Valentine's party at school. Instead, we will have a Valentine Exchange in class on Friday, February 12th. If your child would like to bring Valentine cards to give to their friends, they can do so on Friday, Feb. 12th.

Please be aware that food or candy treats should not be attached to Valentine cards. If your child wants to attach pencils, erasers, stickers, etc…. to their cards for their friends, that is fine. Students will not be allowed to pass out any edible items.

It is optional for children to bring Valentines, but if your child does want to bring Valentine cards, we suggest they leave the “To” section blank and only sign their name on the “From” section. If your child wants to decorate a shoebox or a bag at home, they can certainly do so and bring it to school with their cards. Otherwise I will give them a bag to collect any cards they might receive.
