Burton Street News and Information

June 2021

Hello families,

It's amazing that it is already June and we are wrapping up an absolutely extraordinary school year! Despite the uncertainties and changes, we have had a successful school year in which our phenomenal teachers and staff have worked tirelessly to provide a consistent and fun educational experience in the most 'typical' ways possible.

While other districts are just returning to school, Cazenovia has been committed to providing in-person learning, five days a week, since opening day in September. As of today, 93% of our students are learning in person at Burton Street. For our students learning from home, they have had a consistent classroom teacher and community for the entire school year, thanks to our four unbelievably innovative teachers and a teaching assistant.

Burton Street has been in session all but nine school days this year. These nine remote days were due to Covid-19 quarantines and/or precautions. This would not have been possible without the unbelievable support and flexibility of our families and community. I know this year posed its challenges and procedures were different and I truly appreciate your adherence and understanding. What Cazenovia and Burton Street have accomplished this year is nothing short of remarkable.

I am so very proud of the Burton Street community and the amazing things we have accomplished this year. From the 'smaller' tasks of remembering to send the Covid-19 yellow slips to school, to the 'larger' tasks of bringing Chromebooks home and going remote, we have made it through the year! An enormous THANK YOU to all the families and community members who graciously made changes and adjustments to allow for the school year to occur in person safely, amidst a capital project and new principal to boot!

I thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for welcoming me to Burton Street and being so supportive this year. I truly appreciate your partnership and continue to welcome productive conversations and feedback. I am honored to be part of the Burton Street community.

Have a wonderful summer full of memories and fun! Stay safe!

Pennant Walk

On the last day of school, June 24, we will continue the tradition of the 4th graders parading with their pennants.

K-3 students will be called outside by grade level to stand on the bus loop sidewalk to watch the 4th graders. Parents/guardians will be welcome on campus, but asked to stand on the grass. Please park in the lot off of Clark Street. No vehicles will be allowed in the bus loop as it will be coned off.

At 10am, 4th graders will depart the building and walk the bus loop twice with their pennants so both students and parents/guardians can cheer for them. Following the parade, all students will return to the building for the remainder of the day.

Reminder: Class Placements

As a reminder, class placements will be mailed home over the summer.

Kindergarten Orientation

All families with registered kindergarten students should have received information regarding Kindergarten Orientation on June 10 and what session your child is to attend. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to start time for temperature checks. Two adults may attend per child. All attendees must wear masks.

There will be two sessions:

Session 1: 5:00-5:45pm (last names Al-Lo)

Session 2: 6:15-7:00pm (last names Ma-Wo)

All attendees will be asked to exit to the playground where families can mingle in a safe manner.

Chromebook and Material Returns

All remote students need to return classroom materials and district owned electronic devices (and chargers) by June 28.

Materials and devices can be dropped off the afternoon of June 24 until 3pm and from 9-2 on June 25. If you cannot make either of these windows, please contact Mrs. Emmons at kemmons@caz.cnyric.org to make arrangements.

2021-2022 School Year

Details regarding busing, length of day, student drop off and pick up, etc. for next year are not yet determined due to ongoing state and county guidelines. As soon as information is finalized and made available I will communicate with families. Thank you for your patience!

Reminder: Pick Up

If you are picking up your child from school and do not usually do so, please be sure to send a note in with your child the morning of so that the main office can plan accordingly!

****LAKER DAY****

The kids got to spend time outside as a grade level today during special time with their classmates and special area teachers. Students danced with Mr. Condon and Mrs. Carroll, sang "Pride of the Lakers" with Mrs. Johnson, chalked the walk (and bus loop) with Miss Kelly and listened to a poem with Mrs. McGinnis. It was a beautiful, successful, super fun and energetic day! I heard so many kids say "This is the best day ever!" A big thank you to the special area teachers who made this happen!
