Principal's Message

Happy Friday Bobcat Families,

It has been a great week in Bobcat Country! We practiced an important safety drill with students and staff, we completed STAR benchmark assessments, and we even hosted Meet the Teacher Night.

Thank you to our staff and PTO for a wonderful Meet the Teacher event! It was so great to have everyone able to come into the building again. Stay tuned for even more awesome events this school year!

Starting Tuesday, September 6th we are allowing parents/guardians to have lunch with their student(s) in the Cafeteria. We ask that you notify the student's teacher in advance. Additionally, you will need to sign in at the front office using your driver's license or state issued ID. While eating with your student, please sit away from other students and do not invite friends to join you.

Also on Tuesday our PTO will host a Playdate on the Playground for 3rd grade students and their families from 5:30 - 6:30pm. This is a great opportunity to meet your child's classmates and their families.

On September the 8th we will host an orientation for ESOL families. The orientation times are 7:00am and 5:00pm. Please attend whichever is most convenient for your schedule.

I wish you all a lovely Labor Day weekend and can't wait to see your students on Tuesday!

Mrs. Aldridge

STAR BENCHMARK ASSESSMENTS

Parents/Guardians,

Your child will take the Renaissance Star test this year. The first testing window opens Aug. 22 and closes Sept. 2. This means your child's teacher can administer the test anytime during this window so some students may have tested by the time you see this newsletter. Below is a link to help you better understand the test and how the results will be used.

If you ever have any questions about Star or the results, you may contact your child's teacher or CRT, Kellie Romanstine, for more information at kellie.romanstine@richlandone.org.

Assignments for COVID Related Absences

For the 22-23 school year, students that are absent due to illness will receive any missed and/or make-up assignments upon return to school. They will have 5 days to return the completed work to their teacher. This is in accordance with AC Moore's typical absence policy. Devices and extended absence assignments will not be sent home this year. Virtual check-in sessions with students will also not occur. Those practices and procedures were in place as a result of Richland One's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

--A Special Welcome to our Newest Bobcat Family Members!--

During the month of September we would like to introduce you to our newest Bobcat Family Members! We are excited to have them as a part of our A.C Moore community and thankful for the contributions and positive influence they will have on our school students and school.

Rochela Burson, Pre-K Instructional Assistant

Ms. Rochelsa Burson stepped into the role of Pre-K Instructional Assistant during the second semester of 21-22 school year. Mrs. Burson is a native of Sumter, South Carolina and has 3 children (2 adult sons and a 15 yr old daughter) and 1 grandson. She enjoys reading, shopping, traveling, attending sports events, helping the less fortunate, and spending time with her children. She has worked with children of all ages in various settings for 25 years. Despite trying several occupations throughout the years, she has found that she is always led back to teaching and nurturing children, which she truly enjoys and feels is her given talent.

Erica Dewitt, Instructional Assistant

Ms. Erica Dewitt joined the A.C. Moore staff at the end of the 21-22 school year shortly after relocating to Columbia from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Prior to relocating, she worked for the Horry County School District from August 2014 until June 2021 as a Multi-school ParaPro. Throughout those years, she worked with moderate/severe students. Prior to that becoming a ParaPro, she studied Early Childhood at Horry Georgetown Tech. Ms. Dewitt is a former Corrections Officer at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and was a volunteer for the Youth Arbitration program with the Richland County Sheriff's Department. She is a proud mom of 3 adults; a son, age 29, and two daughters, ages 27 and 20. She also has a 13-year-old son that attends Irmo Middle School.

Ms. Dewitt is a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan and enjoys attending church, the beach, and riding motorcycles. On a typical day, you'll find her doing what she loves most: spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Tiffany Ligon, Assistant Principal

Tiffany and her husband Will are the proud parents of a son, Coulson, who is a rising 3rd grader. Tiffany has been in the field of education for twenty-three years and she is currently completing her twenty-first year in public education. She started teaching Science and coaching soccer at the secondary levels in Rock Hill, South Carolina before moving back to Columbia to join the faculty at Richland Northeast High School where she later became an Assistant Principal. Most recently she has served for seven years as one of the Assistant Principals at AC Flora High School.

Mrs. Ligon was part of the first cohort to successfully complete the R-1 Ready Leadership Development Program in her pursuit to become a Principal. She holds Masters degrees in both Higher Education and Secondary Education from the University of South Carolina where she is currently pursuing her doctorate. In her spare time, Tiffany enjoys coaching soccer for the YMCA and spending time with her family. Tiffany is excited to be joining the Bobcat family this summer and looks forward to next year!

Reframe Your Negative Thoughts!

“Reframing” is a technique used in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to identify automatic thoughts and replace them with more balanced thoughts. The practice of identifying and stopping these distortions/negative thoughts is crucial in breaking the cycles of stress, anxiety, and depression that so many individuals find themselves stuck in. Click on the image below to find an example of how to begin reframing negative thoughts.
