Reminder: Safe and Warm Dismissal

Student safety is always a high priority at Buffett. We want student arrival and dismissal to be safe and warm. As the days get darker sooner and with the frigid winter temperatures, we wanted to provide you with a few reminders about our after-school and departure procedures:

  • All students are required to leave campus by 3:15 P.M. as the school day ends at 3:05 P.M. Students who are under the supervision of an adult may be in the building after 3:15 P.M.
  • Students who wait for ride must be picked up by 3:15 P.M. and students who walk home must depart by 3:15 P.M.
  • There is no waiting area in or outside of the school building as there are no adult supervisors.
  • Parents will be notified when their student is on campus after 3:15 P.M.
  • Effective January 29, 2018, parents are required to enter the building and check their students out after 3:15 P.M. due to the lack of supervision. This will ensure the accountability of our students.
  • After-school athletics and activities procedures stays the same.

Science Fair

The Buffett Science Fair proved once again to be a successful event for our Buffett Students. Over 250 science fair projects were submitted. Judges from Buffett, former Buffett students, and community members judged the projects and were impressed with the hard-work, dedication, and knowledge of the participants.

Buffett's Robotics teams have been working hard all year and have competed in several successful competitions. Most recently, Team 1060A took 1st place in their competition at McMillan Magnet. Congratulations also to Team 1060B and 1060C for all their dedication and team work.

Quiz Bowl

Congratulations to Buffett Quiz Bowl on their strong showing Saturday at Concordia. The Buffett A Team made up of Arnav, Kaden, Luca, and Daelyn, went undefeated throughout the morning rounds and made it to the Elite 8 before being knocked out by a strong team from St. Pius/St. Leo. The two saints proved to have talents beyond their Irish soda bread! The Buffett B Team consisting of Ace, Charlotte, Jill, and Taya, knocked off Brownell Talbot before losing out to a tough team from King Science. Thanks to Coaches Moyer and Daugherty for all their work with these students.

On Dec. 5, some awesome singing belted out of our 5-6th grade Chorus and BIG students at their winter concert. Thanks to Mrs. Buller-Kirke and all the singers!

On Dec. 12, our 5th-8th grade band students performed. They sounded beautiful! Thanks to Mr. Myre and all our instrumental musicians!

On Jan. 23, students in strings held their winter concert. Thanks to Mr. Miller and the strings students.

Art Club-Exquisite Art Show

Student in the first semester Art Club worked collaboratively with students across the district to create a canvas project that was on display at the Exquisite Collaborative Art Show held on Jan. 12 at the Bancroft Gallery. Pictured below are some 5-6th grade master pieces. Students in Mrs. Gotch's Art Club also participated.

The Buffett Boys Swim Team season is underway. The snow days and pool problems caused some delays in the competitive season. The first swim meet was held on Jan. 31. See the upcoming events below for upcoming meets and consider attending to cheer on our swimmers.

Buffett Lady Bobcats are off to an awesome start to their season. Both the A and B teams are undefeated. They have competed and won against both Norris and Beveridge. We look forward to watching them play in their upcoming games.

The Buffett Wrestling team has competed in two duals. They have seen great success so far! Several wrestlers are undefeated. We wish them good luck in their future meets!

Students of Distinction

Students of Distinction are chosen monthly by their team teachers. Each team chooses two students that exemplify the Buffett High Five: respect, responsibility, preparedness, ready to learn, and safety. Students are notified in the morning and then enjoy lunch with Mr. CK, a parent or guardian, and a friend.

Instructional Tips for Home

Student Device Advice

Thank you to all families in their support of facilitating a home charging process to ensure your child comes to school with a charged laptop.

If you notice black marks along the bottom of your child's laptop screen, please go to buffett.ops.org and fill out a damage report form so your child's laptop can be repaired. Broken screens are covered under the accidental warranty on student devices.

Academics at Home

Supporting Your Child in Middle School Math

from PBS Parents

Below are some useful tips on how you can support your child in math:

  • Always have notes from class, a textbook or other resources right next to a homework paper. If your child is stuck, he/she is likely to find a similar problem in one of the resources that can help you move forward.
  • Ensure the student takes responsibility for her own learning by finding assistance independently; the ability to access help on your own is essential for student success in all areas of academics.
  • Never just, give the answer to problems! By giving answers, you are depriving your child of the chance to develop the mental processes required to learn a new concept. Work through the problem with your child when he/she is having difficulty.
  • The most important thing to convey to your children is not to give up. Mathematical concepts are intricate and take time to grasp.

Student Safety Patrol

Safety Patrol has started! For the rest of this school year, we will have students at the crosswalk in front of the school in the mornings. We will be adding more posts and an afternoon schedule next year. If your child is here early in the mornings, we would love additions to our group. You can email Mrs. Buschelman for an application at heather.buschelman@ops.org.
