Sumner Beaten Nearly to Death!
Senator Sumner beaten with a cane by Preston brooks
Senator Sumner was attending a meeting at the senators chamber yesterday, may 22 1856, when he was unexpectedy attacked and beaten bruttally with a cane by Preston Brooks. The reasoning for Brooks attack is believed to have been in honor of his uncle who Sumner had criticized at a speech, where he also had mocked southerners. Sumner is currently being taken care of in a hospital, where doctors say he will never be able to fully recover from the beating. Preston Brooks on the other hand is in a hot and cold situation. Northerners are outraged and furious about this beating and some want Brooks hanged in public! In the south there has been much respect towards Brooks, someone has even sent him a new cane with a plating that reads "HIT HIM AGAIN".
