As luck would have it, the entire school was tuned into the announcement channel to have a great view of the bug munching... and literally as I was putting the bug in my mouth the technology shut off, leaving all of the students wondering if I really did it or if it was planned! Well, it wasn't planned, and it wasn't fun, but in fairness we got the announcements up and running again and I ate a second bug!!!
Then with a sneaky twist, Mrs. Langlois had the top school fundraiser Elise pull a teachers name out of the bucket....Ms. Glanert joined me in my bug eating feast. Needless to say she was a champ and way tougher than I was, not to mention a fantastic sport. The videos are posted on our Facebook page if you haven't gotten a chance to sneak a peek, please do!! It was a great day!
Specialist and Support Staff Curriculum Corner
We have been utilizing Visible Thinking Routines within our Language Arts and Math curriculum. In Reading, we are focusing on vocabulary words to better understand the text and modeling how to find text based evidence questions. In Math, we are working on anything from Touch math all the way to understanding vocabulary in order to solve word problems.
Band has started for 6th grade students at Havel! The students have learned to make a sound on their mouthpieces, put their instruments together, basic care for their instruments, and the first three notes. You should start to recognize familiar tunes like "Hot Cross Buns" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb" as the students continue to improve.
Students in Havel’s Media have spent some time learning about and celebrating veterans. (See image above of the white table dinner and ask your child what the book was about!) We have connected how Veterans take pledges to serve & to protect and how students take pledges to protect their digital footprints as they navigate the internet. Using Common Sense Media as our guide, students explore and uncover how they can be safe digital citizens. This is the foundation for our Festival of Coding in December. To add to the excitement, look for a BOGO Scholastic Fair in the Media Center the last week of November. Shopping time will be on their Media Center day. Again, most books range from $6.00 and up. This is a non profit fair and held strictly as a "thank you" to the families who support our fairs throughout the year! Wishing the Havel families a safe, fun-filled holiday season!
In addition to continuing our practice with Wonders vocabulary, EL students learned about Diwali, the Festival of Lights, traditionally celebrated in India and Nepal. Students created a rangoli to welcome visitors to our classroom.
In ISM kindergarteners are learning about the human body; first graders are learning about reptiles; second grade is starting a unit on plants; third graders are learning about fractions; fourth graders are working on multiplication facts; fifth graders are working on multiplication facts and place value; sixth graders are learning about the order of operations.

Parent Teacher Conferences
On November 13th and 15th Havel will be having parent-teacher conferences. Conferences are an opportunity to extend the lines of communication between home and school, keep families informed about their children's academic and social progress, and develop two-way communication strategies that invite family engagement and improve student learning. Teachers will be sharing academic progress and growth based on classroom observations, testing data, assessments, & assignments. They will discuss enrichment or intervention strategies to support students' learning and will also discuss issues that may be interfering with students' learning and growth.
Your child's success in the classroom is dependent on the teacher, the student, and the parent/home/teacher connection. Our goal is that 100% of our families participate in conferences in the coming weeks.
Thank you in advance for being our partner in your child's education.
1st Quarter Report Cards
During November, Havel will distribute reports cards electronically. The first marking period grades will be sent electronically to families after scheduled parent-teacher conferences at the end of the day on Friday, November 16, 2018.
To receive the report cards, parents will need to have a secure PowerSchool account. Parents who do not have access to a PowerSchool account will need to register for one prior to Friday, November 9. The report cards will then be automatically e-mailed to the address that is used to register the PowerSchool account. If you already have a PowerSchool account, you do not need to take any further action. The report card automatically will be sent to you electronically.
Please note that if you have students in junior high school and high school, the reports cards will be electronically sent by the end of the day, Friday, November 9, 2018.
