In the 1860 presidential election, republicans, led by Abraham Lincoln, opposed the expansion of slavery into U.S.A. territories Lincoln won, but before his inauguration on March 4, 1861, seven slave states with cotton-based economies formed the Confederacy.

From November 15 to December 21 1864 union general William T. Sherman led some 60,000 soldiers on a 285 mille from Atlanta to Savannah , G.A.
The purpose of this "March to the Sea'' was frighten Georgia's civilian population into abandoning the confederate cause.
