What's Happening in Your Library?

Spring BOGO Book Fair
It's that time of year again! The O.L. Slaton library will be hosting our second annual spring BOGO book fair with Scholastic April 3-5 from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. This book fair is different than our fall book fair in several ways. For starters, everything is buy one get one free! We will have most of the same items as we did in the fall, but they come with a freebie this time. This book fair is always a lot of fun for our students. We don't make any money off of this type of book fair because our profit is in the free items, which go directly to the ones purchasing. We basically hold the BOGO book fair for the kids - not for the library. This year's theme is camping. We have really cute decorations to accompany the merchandise, but we need YOU to talk it up with the students.
A special shout out goes to the science department for agreeing to bring their classes to the library for the book fair. Summer Johnson has been a big help in organizing how and when everyone will come. Betty and I appreciate all the help we are getting!
So, mark your calendars for the BOGO book fair April 3-5 during school hours. And look ahead to the future because BOGO items make great birthday presents and stocking stuffers. You can't beat free! We'll see you in the library!
New Books
We recently got in several new books, many of which were requested by the students specifically. Each year, we spend a good portion of our budget updating our library's collection of books and e-books. Come check out our new titles located by the library windows! As always, if you need books for your classes to use for research, please don't hesitate to ask us. We are always happy to provide additional resources for you!
Lone Star Books
Lone Star books are nominated by individuals and read and voted on by a committee. For a book to be named a Lone Star book, it is read and discussed many times by many people. The 2017 list of Lone Star award winners can be found here. Our library will be getting these books in the next couple of weeks. I can't wait to see which is your favorite!
New STEM Materials
We recently purchased new STEM materials for our morning library program and makerspace. We have a robotic spider, amazing piano, robotic beetle, a maze, and more. Stop by our library to see what cool things we have and learn how you can use them in your classrooms! We're full of ideas and willing to share!
Morning Library STEAMR Program
We continue to offer our morning library STEAMR (Science Technology Engineering Art Math Reading) program. Times and dates are a little sporadic due to computers being in testing mode, STAAR preparations, and general scheduling; however, we make an attempt to hold morning library activities two to three times per week. Please encourage your students to join in the fun!

Author Spotlight: Darren Shan
I first became acquainted with Darren Shan's books when I was teaching at Mackenzie five years ago. My husband and I read through all 12 books in the Cirque du Freak series over the course of a year comprised of several short road trips. It quickly became a favorite for both of us. While Shan's books are geared toward middle to high schoolers, adults will enjoy them as well. After we finished Cirque, we picked up the prequel series, The Saga of Larten Crepsley, which has also proved an enjoyable read thus far.
