Playground Improvements and Safety
Parents, we are in the process of improving our playground to ensure the safety for all of our students. One of our trees had large, exposed roots, so this week we have had work done to build up and cover the area by adding dirt and grass seed around the tree so that students are not tripping over these roots. Students stayed indoors for recess one day this week as the work was being completed and to allow trucks to come back and forth into the blacktop area.

Honors Chorus
Honors chorus was formed in 1982 by the MCPS Department of Curriculum and Instructions to bring together talented children of various backgrounds to study and perform choral music representing a wide variety of historical eras and cultures; to provide a challenging performance opportunity for 5th grade elementary students with outstanding singing ability; to help refine choral singing skills and enhance their ability to read music; and to reinforce the curriculum framework.
Mrs. Jackson held Honors Chorus auditions on November 20th and 21st. She had a great turn-out of 18 student’s sign-up to audition this year, her highest number to date. Auditioning took courage and, while she wishes she could send everyone that auditioned, she is only allowed to send 5 students this year. Congratulations to Brynn McPeak, Shymere Williams, Mrinalini Uniyal, Evelyn Ward, and Rae Briscoe. Not only will these 5 students have to rehearse music for the Cedar Grove chorus, but beginning in February, they will meet with other 5th graders from 40 other schools in Northern Montgomery County every Wednesday evening to rehearse fun, yet challenging choral music for a final performance in May.
Mrs. Jackson wishes to congratulate not only the 5 students that made it into Honors Chorus this year but also the other 13 students that auditioned. Great job everyone!
Student Government Association (S.G.A.) and Toys for Tots
The S.G.A. will once again be collecting toys for the Marine Toys for Tots Drive this holiday season. We will be collecting toys starting December 4 through December 15 inside the main entrance in the box marked Toys for Tots. Thanks to those that participated last year we were able to donate 120 toys! The S.G.A. is asking that all of Cedar Grove considers donating this year to not only meet but surpass last year’s collection total, while simultaneously bringing a little more joy to a child’s holiday season.
Toys for Tots asks that you donate new and unwrapped toys for children up to age 16. Custom toys that you have made will also be accepted. Toys for Tots will not accept food or clothing items or realistic looking weapons. “If donated, such items will not be distributed.”
So the next time you’re out shopping please remember our Toys for Tots campaign and let’s see what a difference CEDAR GROVE can make this year.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
The Cedar Grove SGA
When to keep children home from school
The cold and flu seasons have arrived! It is important to know when to keep your child home from school and when to return your child to school following an illness.
The single most important thing you can do to prevent catching a cold or flu is to wash your hands frequently. We highly recommend a flu shot yearly. Please see the link below to provide you with this information. In the event that your child becomes ill at school, the health room technician or school nurse will contact you. It is very important that we have updated and current phone numbers in case we need to reach you.
