Unami United
December 9, 2016
Dear Unami Parents, Guardians & Students,
As you will see in this week's "instructional spotlights" Unami teachers implement a wide variety of instructional strategies to engage and enlighten their students. As a sampling, this week 8th grade science students saw the images from their pages in 3-D and 9th grade social studies re-enacted life in the 1920's and 30's,
Our wonderful winter concerts began this week, but don't worry if you missed this one. You can take a quick peek from our newsletter, or attend our second concert this coming week.
As winter weather approaches, please note the many ways in which our district notifies parents of our late arrivals, early dismissals or closings due to inclement weather. Here is a link to our district page on school closings.
Stay warm this weekend:-)
Unami United,
Mrs. Lang
Principal
INSTRUCTIONAL SPOTLIGHTS
This year, along with our newsletter, we will be "tweeting" out photos and 144 character descriptions of all the fabulous happenings in our community. You can easily filter these "tweets" by using the district's new CB Mobile App.
Mrs. Haag Discovers Augmented Reality
8th Grade Science Teacher, Mrs. Haag, recently visited the main office, excited to share a new augmented reality app. she stumbled upon. It's super cool but a bit tough to describe... The app uses something akin to a Quick Response (QR) Code to read information from a piece of paper, which then allows a user to see images from the paper as 3-Dimensional on their electronic device. For example, Mrs. Haag used the app with paper "blocks" of elements, which then allowed her to show her students the protons, neutrons, and electrons in each as 3-D images. Even cooler, when she put 2 elements "blocks" next to each other, she could show her students how the elements bond. She was also able to show examples of how the technology works to make a coloring book picture 3-Dimensional and to make an image of the human heart "come to life". It is really impressive!
The picture below gives you a sense of how this looks. Check out how the human heart seems to pop out of the paper!
UNAMI 9TH GRADERS VISIT THE 1920'S!!!
As a culmination of their studies and research on the 1920’s, ninth grade students participated in a simulation of a traditional 1920’s day on Friday, December 9th. By dressing up as their 1920’s historical figure that they had researched, students learned to dance the Charleston, watched a compilation of Charlie Chaplin movies, listened to a rendition of The Great Gatsby and participated in fads from the 20’s. During the party, students interviewed one another to gain insight into the accomplishments and contributions that other 1920’s historical figures had made throughout their life in American history. The goal was to create a social network within the 9th grade class of 20’s and 30’s historical individuals. Some classes created Instagram pages of their figures while others completed a research page to aid in their understanding of the complexity of the characters they chose to represent. All students contributed to the success of the day by bringing in food and dressing up as their character.
8TH GRADE ART
8th grade students in Ms. Schollenberger’s art classes are creating clay bowls with optical illusions in them!
First they draped clay slabs over bowl forms to shape them and then added a base to the bowl. The OP art design they created was transferred from their sketchbooks using water based markers and tracing paper. The plan is to color them in with underglaze clay paints and then seal them with a clear glaze. Students are working diligently to improve both their hands on skills and creative problem solving abilities in Art!
Winter Concert #1 Set the Stage for the Holiday Season!
This past Tuesday, December 6, Unami held its first of two winter concerts. Featured in the concert were:
- 8th/9th Grade Orchestra
- 8th/9th Grade Chorus
- 8th/9th Grade Band
- 9th Grade Chorus
- Jazz Band
Our audience was treated to a diverse offering of music, including Christmas and Hanukkah holiday songs, as well as some non-holiday tunes to further diversify the event. The night kicked off with the light sounds of our stringed instruments, and concluded with some rockin' tunes from our jazz band. Each of the groups looked and sounded amazing!
Thanks to all who attended and for your support of Unami music all year.
Come on out to our second and final winter concert this Wednesday, December 14, starting at 7 p.m.!
