Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term 2 - Issue 5

A word from Mr Broom.

Friday didn't start well! Freezing temperatures overnight made our school grounds treacherous this morning and I was the first casualty, falling flat on my back when leaving the car. I hope you all made it into school safely.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Our tree arrives on Monday and so does the usual Christmas card postbox.

By the end of today, I will have spent four afternoons teaching this week, which has been a real treat for me. On Monday, I worked with our wonderful Year 3 children to explore the tomb of Tutankahmun. On Tuesday, I visited Year 1 for the afternoon, to finish off their comparative writing about childhood in the past and present. I worked with year 6 yesterday afternoon, designing new class pages for our new school website and this afternoon, I'm visiting year two for a spot of well-earned golden time!

It's been a busy week also for the teaching staff. Our Early Years team completed their Autumn Term assessments on Monday and we all got together on Wednesday to discuss the Science week which will be coming up in the Spring Term.

If you're out and about Christmas shopping this weekend, have a great time and wrap up warm. I look forward to seeing many of you at our Christmas Fair next week.

A few snaps from this week in school

Football Team Success

Our football team donned their new kit for a bitterly cold clash against Tadcaster Riverside last night. It was clear to see that the team were playing with passion and commitment despite the superior strength of the opposing team. We managed to bag two goals and Sean Wright was the Man of the Match.

Boxtastic Gallery - The EYFS Celebration

Our school all was turned into an art gallery today, celebrating the Early Years children's work on their boxtastic project. They've been studying everything about boxes and have had a great time doing it. A massive thanks to Jo Rodwell, for coming into school and supporting our EYFS team with her wonderful creative skills.

Bad Weather School Closure Information

As we enter the cold spells of the winter period, we may at some point need to take the decision to close the school. Rest assured that we will do everything possible to keep school open so long as it is safe to do so.

If the decision is taken to close school, we will communicate this via:

- ParentPay Text Message (so please ensure your details are up-to-date).

- The School Website (

- Special Newsletter (via email)

- BBC Radio York (103.7, 104.3 & 95.5 FM)

- The BBC North Yorkshire Website (

If you hear nothing from us on these forms of communication, please consider school to be open as normal.

Bring & Buy for Young Voices

As we close in on the Christmas period, I'd like to make you aware of the Bring & Buy sale that our Y5/6 will be holding in the new year. This is in aid of their trip to Sheffield Arena for the Young Voices concert 2018!

If you're having a clear out before or over the Christmas period, please consider this.

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate, we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 1 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 99.6%.

As you can see below, our attendance in some classes is above the national average which is fantastic. Thank you for your support on this.

The overall attendance this week rose to 96.8% and is back above national averages. Many thanks for your continued support with this.

White Rose on the hunt for player (Y6)

Our neighbouring football club, Sherburn White Rose, are looking for new players to join their U11s teams. If your child is in Y6 or you know of anyone who is, let them know. Playing grassroots sport is a really good opportunity for children to make friends and develop social skills.

Sherburn-in-Elmet Lions Club

I met with the Elmet Lions Club on Wednesday to talk about how they could support our school and how our school could become involved in their community work. A couple of points of information:

- The usual Lions' Santa Sleigh will be touring the streets of Sherburn over the coming weeks, starting on Monday.

- The Lions are collecting used Spectacles (not cases) so if you have any in the bottom of a draw (irrespective of condition) please bring them into school before Wednesday 20th December. These will be sent to parts of the third world.

If Elmet Lions is something you would like to get involved in, please email Ann at
