National Bubble Gum Day is Friday, February 1!

On Friday, February 1, Student Council will celebrate National Bubble Gum Day by sponsoring a Gum Day at Sunflower! Each student can purchase a gum pass for a recommended donation of a $1.00, but any amount will be accepted. The passes will be sold first thing in the morning on the stage. All of the proceeds from the gum sale will go to support our Sunflower Eagle fund that is used to help Sunflower students in need.

With the purchase of the gum pass, that student will receive a special stamp on the hand and be allowed to chew gum throughout the day. In addition to the stamp, each student will also receive two pieces of gum. No extra pieces of gum will be sold; however, students can bring gum from home to chew with the purchase of the pass.

In order for this event to be a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone, we have two expectations. Our expectations for the gum include: the gum is to be in your mouth or in the trash (we don't want any gum to find its way to the floor, desks, or walls) and if the gum is being played with, the student's pass will be removed for the day.

Thank you for your continued support of our Sunflower Eagle fund at Sunflower!

Spring Picture Day - February 5

Strawbridge Photos will be at Sunflower on Tuesday, February 5 for spring individual and class pictures!

You will be receiving a payment envelope for the class picture, along with a flyer with more information about the individual pictures.

If you would like to purchase a class picture, please remember to bring your payment envelope and give to your teacher.

You do not prepay for these individual pictures! You will be receiving a packet of photos within the next couple of weeks. At that time, you will pay for photos you keep and return the photos you don’t want to keep.

Chat 'n Chew for 1st and 2nd Graders

An invitation from Mrs. Rains...

What is Chat ‘n Chew?

Chat ‘n Chew is a program that gives children the chance to listen to adults read books and discuss these great reads with their friends. Parents volunteer twice a month to read to a small group of children. Each Chat ‘n Chew group will meet during lunch and while the children eat, their parent sponsor will read one or two picture books. After they read each book, the children will discuss the book. The books can be brought in from home, checked out from the public library, or borrowed from Sunflower’s media center.

Who can participate?

Chat ‘n Chew is a program for 1st and 2nd graders (3rd and 4th graders have the chance to participate in Novel Navigators). Students and parents need to sign the form below and return it to Mrs. Rains in the LIT Lab by Friday, January 25th. Chat ‘n Chew groups will be formed and announced the week of February 11th and will begin meeting the 1st week in March.

How can I become a sponsor?

Fill out the Google form (click on the link below) Select which day(s) that work best for you. 1st grade eats lunch from 10:50-11:20 and 2nd grade eats from 12:00-12:30. I will be happy to help you select great read-alouds. I will also provide each coach with a list of discussion starter questions. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. can also sponsor a group!

Online Absence Reporting is Available Once Again!

Due to many requests about this missing link to the Online Absence Reporting, I wanted to make sure it was one of the first things added back on the Sunflower website.

Parents have two different options to report an absence for your student. You can report the absence electronically via the Skyward Family Access. You can gain access to this link by clicking on MENU, and then clicking on Online Absence Reporting at the bottom of the menu (see photo below). If you do not remember your login information, please contact the office at 913-856-3700 or email

You can also call into the Attendance line at 913-856-3749 and leave a message for the office.

And as always, if your student will miss any days due to an out of town trip, please email Dr. Jones ahead of time at for preapproval.

Thank you again for your patience while we complete the transition to the new Sunflower website!

it makes recommendations, not decisions.
