Letter from Principal Nelson
Residents of Smallville-
Tis’ the season and we are elated to be able to spend it here with your student. After a much needed and restful Fall Break, our kids came back and immediately got to the business of getting to business. 9 days typically is more like 9 weeks when dealing with middle schoolers, but this year we were met by kids who returned eager and ready to work. They hit the ground running in regards to the rigor and we expect nothing less from them until December 19th. Speaking of rigor, 7th grade students will be taking their ELA Benchmark on Tuesday of next week, so please encourage a good night’s sleep the night before and a healthy breakfast the day of. The test is 2 part, revision/editing and writing, and they should do well, providing they take it seriously and try their best.
Student Shout Outs: Big props to 7th grader Lexi Venditelli for her homemade gift of snowflakes she cut out for the office during her break. Early Monday morning she found me and asked if it was okay if she could hang up her gift in the office for the staff. We are so proud and flattered that during her extended break from school she took the time to give thanks to those who help support her. Now if you know Lexi, then you know how easy it is to offer her support; she’s a top-notch kid who has a heart as big as the moon and we are a better campus for having her as a member. Her selfless act made mine and the office staff’s day/week/month/year.
We also want to recognize Henry Elizondo for reading the most minutes in AISD on MyOn this month! For those of you who don’t know, MyOn is an online reading program that has subject specific books for science and social studies. Students can log on here at school or at home. Henry and his 30 minutes a night habit produced the most minutes read by any kid in AISD...all 81,000 of them. Way to go!
Lots of Smalliday events on the Horizon in regards to Fine Arts performances and the like, so please stay tuned to the website and this newsletter so you don’t miss them. We love this time of year when our students and teachers get to strut their stuff and look forward to seeing you at any one of the numerous shows that are planned.
