Modified Orton-Gillingham Approach
for Individual & Small Group Instruction (March 2019)
Workshop Description & Overview
This 28 hour workshop introduces participants to Orton-Gillingham methodology and demonstrates intervention strategies for classroom, small group or individual student use. The class will also provide teachers with the foundations of the English Language, sample lessons using an O-G approach, and many additional resources. Space is limited to thirty participants...please register early to guarantee your seat.
Topics will Include:
- An overview and Introduction to a Modified Orton-Gillingham approach for individual and group instruction
- Examples of an Orton-Gillingham lesson plan and implementation strategies
- Phonological Awareness
- Alphabetic Principle, letter formation, letter fluency and letter sounds
- Informal Assessments
- Possible sequences for teaching letter / sounds
- Irregular words and spelling generalizations
- Morphology – A brief look at prefixes, suffixes, roots, etc. in the Anglo Saxon, Latin and Greek layers of language
Dates and Times: This 28 hour course will be taught over FOUR, 7-hour sessions (1 hour lunch break each day).
- Day One: Monday, March 18, 2019 (8:00 am – 4:00 pm)
- Day Two: Tuesday, March 19, 2019 (8:00 am – 4:00 pm)
- Day Three: Wednesday, March 20, 2019 (8:00 am – 4:00 pm)
- Day Four: Thursday, March 21, 2019 (8:00 am - 4:00 pm)

- A binder filled with lesson plans, templates, worksheets, student activities and strategies and many other reading intervention resources.

Four Resource Books Such as:
- PS: Prefixes, Suffixes, Roots (Resource of Lists, Phrases, Sentences, Poems and Stories)
- Angling for Words: Basic Angling Practice Book (Student Book)
- Phonemic Awareness in Young Children
- Recipe for Reading: Intervention Strategies for Struggling Readers
Registration Deadline, Contact Hours, and Graduate Credit:
- Registration Deadline: The deadline to register is February 1, 2019
- Contact Hours: 28 Contact Hours Provided by the MRESC
- Graduate Credit (Optional):Up-To-Two (2) Semester Hours through Ashland University will be offered to interested participants for an additional fee of $235 per semester hour. Payment instructions and other information will be handed out at the training.
About the Instructor: Susan Lohnes
Susan has served as a special education teacher, supervisor, and director for the Springfield City Schools. Additionally, she was the special education supervisor/director for Xenia City Schools. She has experience teaching at the elementary, middle school, high school and college levels. Susan has successfully utilized the Orton‐Gillingham approach with students and adults in small and large group settings. Orton-Gillingham can be used with all students, within all 3 tiers of intervention. This multi-sensory approach is especially helpful in teaching children with dyslexia and other language-based delays.
Registration Fees:
Registration includes four (4) full-days of training and materials kit as described above:
- $450 for Hardin, Shelby, Logan, Madison, and Champaign County Public School Districts, Boards of DD, & Career Centers.
- $525 for school districts outside of the above counties or other agencies/non-profits.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION & REMINDERS
What time should I arrive at the training site? Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete the check-in process.
Food & Beverage: Bottled water and assorted breakfast bars will be available at the beginning of each session. While coffee or other food will not be served, participants are free to bring snack items for themselves or to share with the group. Lunch will be on your own. Please plan accordingly…..
What You Should Bring? Participants should bring note taking materials and writing utensils with them to the session.
Will Graduate Credit Be Available? Yes! One (1) or Two (2) semester hours will be available through Ashland University. Interested participants will need to pay an additional fee of $235 per credit hour to Ashland University. Additional information regarding graduate credit (including a registration form) will be provided at the session.
Our Cancellation Policy - Due to the high cost of materials for this event, cancellations must be received 30 days prior to the event. Cancellations received outside of this policy will not be accepted. Attendees and/or employing districts will be billed accordingly.
