Meadowbrook News

From Mrs. Sawatzky

Good afternoon Meadowbrook,

Next Tuesday from 6:00pm-7:30pm we will be hosting Curriculum Night, which is an opportunity for parents and caregivers to meet our classroom and specialist teachers and learn about the curriculum areas students will experience this year. The night is broken into 30 minute sessions so that you can personalize your experience.

Grade level sessions will take place at 6:00pm and 7:00pm. Kindergarten, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th grades will hold their sessions in their individual classrooms. First grade will meet collectively in the Gym, 4th grade in the Cafeteria, and 5th grade in the flex space adjacent to their classrooms.

The Specialist (Art, Music, PE, Spanish, Enrichment, and Guidance) sessions will take place at 6:30pm and 7:00pm. These sessions are less formal and allow you to move flexibly to the specialist classrooms. In each room, Specialist teachers are prepared to provide examples of projects that students will complete this year, as well as answer any questions that you have.

Please remember this is an event for parents and caregivers only. We look forward to seeing you!

In partnership,

P.S. Have you purchased your Carnival tickets yet?

Learn about eLearning days

Hopkins Public Schools has made an important change to our inclement weather policy (sometimes thought of as snow days). Starting this school year, when there is a need to close school due to weather, Hopkins Public Schools will shift to an eLearning day for PreK-12 students. Moving to eLearning days makes it possible for students to engage in learning even when the weather makes it unsafe to operate the in-person school. In addition, an eLearning format allows the district to plan for weather without having to consider adding additional days to the school year due to unexpected school closures. eLearning days do not apply to VirtualEDU as they will continue normal operations in the event of a weather-related closure. You can learn more about this policy on our website.

Social-Emotional Learning Survey September 21 - October 5

This is in accordance with our school board policy 520 to alert all parents of any surveying their child is taking part in.

Building our social-emotional learning skills is an important goal for our school this year. We will be asking for your 3-6th grade child to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning via an online survey they will be completing at school in their homerooms. We will be asking home teachers to reflect on K-2 children.

The survey content will ask students to self-reflect on social and emotional competencies that align with the Hopkins graduate traits outlined in the district's strategic plan (e.g., sense of belonging, and rigorous expectations).

We are asking that all our students participate in the surveys. If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to answer a question, they can skip the item altogether. The responses to these surveys will be completely confidential. We are partnering with a third-party vendor to support us in administering these surveys. If you have any questions about the SEL survey or would like information about opting out, please don’t hesitate to contact us. You may also choose to opt your student out of this survey no later than September 19th.

Meadowbrook Carnival

We’re TWO weeks away from the Meadowbrook Carnival fundraiser on Friday, Sept. 30 (a no-school day). View the Carnival website for details and FAQs. Here are three things to do now:

Ticket sales are now open! Unlimited-ticket youth wristbands are $15. Adults do not need wristbands. Look for the flyer in your student’s Friday Folder. Skip the onsite lines and buy online now.

Meadowbrook Adventures is a lucky draw fundraiser as part of the Carnival where you buy entry tickets to win experiences donated by teachers and staff. Visit the Meadowbrook Adventures page to see the list of adventures, fill in your entry form, and return to school or the Carnival with $1 per entry. You can also look for a flyer in your student’s Friday folder.

We need your help! We have filled 79% of the volunteer slots and need 50+ more adult or student volunteers, primarily in the 6:00-7:00 slot. Run a game or activity with your student or volunteer with other caregivers and expand your Meadowbrook connections. You can also use the QR code in your student’s Friday folder. Choose your volunteer spot now.

New for 2022:
Choose a grade-level-specific volunteer slot to meet other caregivers with students in the same grade. Get to know other caregivers in our school community with these designated slots by grade:

Art Adventure

The Art Adventure program will be back again this year in January of 2023. We are currently seeking in-room volunteers to help share an appreciation for art with our scholars at Meadowbrook. The commitment is just three sessions but the experience to interact with kids in the classroom is priceless!

Art Adventure is a wonderful way to engage with students and become a memorable part of their classroom experience. Sign up to lead (often entertaining and insightful) discussions with students about artwork from the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) collection. No previous experience is required and no art or art history education is needed at all! All training provided by Mia. Most sessions are delivered in-person but virtual sessions can also be offered.

Looking forward to connecting! Please email us with your desire to participate or any questions about the program -
