Leavin' on a Jet Plane
This is not a simple question to answer as there are a lot of criteria to be met. For flights, I prefer print books to my e-reader because, well, because I just do. Print books, however, come with spines and covers, which reveal the contents to all and sundry. I'm hardly a literary snob, but I like to choose titles that offset my inevitably disheveled state with some whiff of brains or taste or charm. The book can't be too big because I have to have more than one. (Never again do I want repeat the experience of being stuck on a transatlantic flight with only the turgid idiocy of Atlas Shrugged, the fattest book I could find at the airport bookstore, for entertainment.) The book can't be too controversial because I don't want to argue with someone when I'm shoehorned into an economy seat and can't escape. And the book can't be too silly because librarians are already misunderstood enough and, should the subject of jobs come up, I feel I should be a credit to my profession.
With all this swirling in my head, I went to the stacks and came back with The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan (397 pages), a Man Booker prize winner I've been meaning to read, to fill the "literary but not too pretentious" category and A Life Discarded: 148 Diaries Found in the Trash by Alexander Masters (258 pages), for that quirky touch. Will anyone actually look at me and think, "How intriguing, she's reading that whimsical book and seems to be carrying a literary prize winner as well!"? No, I'm not really that delusional. But imagining that possibility is part of what makes being a librarian on the road so much fun.
