West Irondequoit CSD update from Aaron Johnson
January 25, 2022
Dear Families:
You may be hearing about news from downstate in Nassau County, where a State Supreme Court judge declared the state mask mandate unconstitutional. The State of New York will appeal and seek a stay to keep this ruling in place.
We want to be very clear: For the health and safety of our students, staff and community, our district will continue to follow the current COVID-19 recommendations of the CDC, NYS Department of Health and Monroe County Department of Public Health. They require all students/staff to wear masks/face coverings indoors. This practice has been proven to limit the spread of the virus. On Monday night, the New York State Education Dept. informed schools that, "It is SED’s (State Education Department's) understanding that the Department of Health will appeal the Nassau County Supreme Court decision, which will result in an automatic stay that will unambiguously restore the mask rule until such time as an appellate court issues a further ruling. Therefore, schools must continue to follow the mask rule." As such, schools must continue to follow the current rules on face coverings.
We appreciate your continued cooperation. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s principal, our COVID-19 Administrator on Special Assignment, Mr. Chuck Miller, or myself.
Reminder - we are distributing test kits from 2-5 PM today (Tuesday) for families with children at Briarwood, Listwood, Southlawn & IHS. For more details, click this link: smore.com/s43a2.
Thank you,
Aaron R. Johnson, Ed.D
