Our Club's Annual Full and Excel Series Competition, the Houston Invitational, News

We have hit a record-breaking year beating our 2020 year numbers of 254 skaters and have registered 265 skaters this year! The committee is so excited about this as we move closer to our goal of being a classy and fun competition that is every skater's annual tradition! But, in order to keep this competition going at this standard, WE NEED YOU TO MAKE IT HAPPEN! All volunteers, sponsors, and donors are welcome! If you have friends who would like to help, please feel free to invite them! Members from other clubs too! Please share this information with your Learn to Skate friends also!

Silent Auction

Our Silent Auction was a fun addition and a huge success last year! We will be putting together fun Movie Night, Wine Tasting, Gift Cards, BBQ, and more fun baskets! Also on the list are items for our amazing goody bags for our 265 skaters who registered. We look forward to offering it again! CLICK HERE to donate.

Judge and Coach Hospitality

Our Judges come for FREE and volunteer their time (we pay their travel and expenses). This year we are bringing in 10 judges from across the country and another 11 that are local or driving in from across the state. We need your help to make sure they are well fed and happy!

Volunteers

The competition goes ALL weekend: Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 6 am. to 12 p.m. The committee members will be there for most of the 28 hours, but we NEED just a few hours of your time to help give breaks and cover areas we can't be in, etc.!

USFS GRADUATING SENIORS AWARD PROGRAM: DEADLINE MARCH 15, 2023

The Graduating Seniors Program was developed to recognize the achievements of those individuals graduating from high school who have made the commitment to continue their training in figure skating while pursuing their academic studies. The purpose of this program is to honor and credit those qualified graduates for their achievements during their high school years through the presentation of a certificate to the skater during a school function or recognition opportunity. To further applaud the achievements of the individuals awarded, U.S. Figure Skating will publish the names of the recipients on both the U.S. Figure Skating Graduating Seniors Program webpage, as well as in SKATING magazine.

Saturday Skater Spotlight! (Morning Exhibitions at Aerodrome)

The Aerodrome has been kind to give us a FREE 10 minutes to perform exhibitions for their Learn to Skate classes and students. Please sign up below if you would like to be a Saturday Skater Spotlight and perform a program! There is a spot for at least 3 sometimes 4! Start practicing those competition free skates in front of a crowd or just perform to show off your skills and have fun! Anyone can do an exhibition! If you have any questions you can contact Lisa at LDLHayes@gmail.com!

NEXT TEST SESSION

The next Test Session will be held Saturday, April 15th, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at BELLERIVE ICE CENTER. Space will be limited. If we need, we will be able to hold tests at AERODROME, Friday, April 14 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. If you have tests, school events, or other commitments, you need to wait until our June session. Space will be limited, so you will need to sign up as soon as you get the notice by email that the test session is open.

We need YOUR HELP! We want to celebrate our skaters, but need to know what they are up to! Attending a competition? Did they qualify for something? Are they headed to a higher competition? Or maybe they just achieved something they've been working hard at! PLEASE SEND THAT INFORMATION TO US AND LET US KNOW! Otherwise, we don't know!

Jane Campbell - President & Test Chair

Jane has been a member of the Board for the past four years. She has been the President for the past three years. In addition to the duties of President, she is also our Test Chair and head of our Test Sessions. She has two skaters with The Skating Club of Houston, Evie, age 12 and Simon, age 8.

Nena Mirkovic-Ruiz - VP Membership

Nena has been a member of the Board for the past four years. She is our Vice President and Membership Chair. She is responsible for membership requests, transfers, and coordination with USFS. She is an Adult Skater herself and has a 20 year old daughter and 18 year old triplets, 2 of which are figure skaters attending college in Boston (Marissa and Christina), and one playing college hockey in Illinois.

Paula Moore - Treasurer

Paula has been a member of the Board since the club was established. Paula is our Treasurer and keeps all of our finances in compliance. She skates on our Adult Theater on Ice Team as well as a judge for USFS. She has two children, Braden, age 17 who is a competitive diver, and daughter Breslyn, age 12 who is a competitive twirler.

Lisa Hayes - Secretary

Lisa has been a member of the Board for the past four years. She started as the Parent Representative and has been the Secretary for the past three years. In addition to the duties of Secretary, she is also our Competition Chair and responsible for organizing our annual competition, Houston Invitational. She has two children, Paige, age 14 who figure skates and Chase, age 18.

Angela McClendon - Director

Angela is our Director who is the Parent Representative for our members at Aerodrome Ice Skating Complex. She has been an active volunteer at Aerodrome for several years and has served on the board for the past year. She has two children, and adult son that is a police officer, and Bella, age 14 who is a figure skater.

Taylor Gilmore - Director

Taylor Gilmore is a Director who is our Coach Representative for our coaches who skate out of Aerodrome Ice Skating Complex. She is a former singles and Theater on Ice skater and has coached for many years. Taylor was a figure skating student herself at both Bellerive and Aerodrome. She has one child, Scarlett, age 3. who is a budding figure skater.

Chieu Foo - Director

Chieu is a Director who is our Parent Representative for our members at Bellerive Ice Center and surrounding area. She has two daughters that are figure skaters, Vanessa, age 18 and Maddy, age 11, as well a daughter, Sophia, age 16, and a son, Nicholas, age 10 that play hockey. Chieu has served on past figure skating club boards previously and brings much experience to our board.

Elena Prudsky - Director

Elena Prudsky is a Director who is our Coach Representative for our coaches who skate out of Bellerive Ice Center and surrounding area. She is a former pairs figure skater and has coached for many years. She and her husband, Val who is also a coach at Bellerive, have two children both of which figure skate, Aleksandra, age 18, and Nikita, age 15.
