Air Pollution

Isn't it shocking that about 2.4 million people die each year from causes connected to air pollution? Well, that number can be lowered, but it would first need some of your help. Air pollution is actually a major problem to anyone, anywhere, and there are many solutions that need to be put into action.

Do You Know What Air Pollution Really Is?

Well actually, air pollution is when chemicals, particles, or biological particles that cause disease, death, discomfort, or damage, go into our atmosphere. (Air Pollution- Wikipedia, 2013) Burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas can produce one of the many things that go into our atmosphere that cause air pollution. (Higgins, 2012)

Have you ever wondered how long air pollution has really been around in our atmosphere and effecting us?

It really started happening quite a long time ago. In every stage of the formations of Earth air pollution happened. First it was caused by volcanic eruptions, then forest fires, as well as fires that human beings started. (Air Pollution Lead to Health Problem in Malaysia,Effects of Air Pollution in Humans, 2010)

Did you really know how serious air pollution is?

Air pollution happens to be very serious. A study in 2009 showed 35% more carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere then a century ago. (Higgins, 2012) Also 50% of pneumonia deaths among children under five are caused by inhaled air pollution. (Air Pollution, 2013) The air pollution levels in the ozone between 2001 and 2007 rose by over 40m3. (Air Pollution- Wikipedia, 2013) Studies have shown that exposure to fine particles increase the chances of hospitalizaton of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Plus chances have developed that chronic health issues caused by particles presented in the air are likely to double or even triple as compared to estimates in 2015. Now, air pollution can happen in many places, but really what are the specifics?

To start off with, air pollution really occurs in the air anyplace on Earth. Then again, it mainly happens in high densely populated metropolitian areas, especially in developing countries. Some examples of those places could be the Los Angeles, United States, Beijing, China, Tokyo, Japan, and London, United Kingdom. (Air Pollution- Wikipedia, 2013)

There are tons of effects of air pollution on humans, what are they?

Some of the many effects of air pollution can be minor or major diseases. That all depends on how bad the pollution is in your area. An example of a major disease can be a lung disease or even cancer. Also some other effects could be allergies, asthma, bronchitis, earaches, and coughing. It can also irritate your eyes, throat, and lungs. (Air Pollution Lead to Health Problem in Malaysia,Effects of Air Pollution in Humans, 2010)

What can governments do to help?

They can:

- set objectives for ambient air quality in order to avoid, prevent, or reduce harmful effects on human health and environment to improve air quality (Air Pollution- Wikipedia, 2013)

- make standards that set the maximum concentrations for certain pollutants (Air Pollution- Wikipedia, 2013)

- create "Smoke Free Zones" in towns (Higgins, 2012)

What can you do to help?

You can:

- bike or walk, instead of driving

- plant

- conserve energy/ electricity

- use fans instead of air conditioning

- buy non-aerosol form products

- learn more about air pollution
