Term 2 Week 6 Friday 29 May 2015
A Message from the Principal
This week marks Pentecost Sunday. This day marks the beginning of the Church and its expansion into Europe by the missionary efforts of Peter and Paul.
It is an important time to stop and reflect on Christ's message of the Gospels. It is a time when we are encouraged to work at finding ways to make a real difference in our world.
As a community we pray:
Lord our God,
open us up to your Spirit living within us,
that we may live fully each day of our lives.
Touch us, that we may become more aware
of all that is around us,
growing in a sense of wonder and awe
and in appreciation for all that we see
and hear and touch, taste and smell.
May we live in such a way
that we never take anything for granted,
but always be appreciative and express our thanks
to those who are part of our lives.
Amen
As we move forward in the term, students in all years have been very active in classrooms, completing assigned tasks and progressing major projects for submission. It is important for students and parents to be reminded that students must always take great care to ensure all work reflects their efforts and their understanding of content and cannot simply be copied from books or internet sites.
God Bless

Numeracy at Cerdon
Games are Great!!!
Playing games is one of the best ways of improving a person’s numeracy. The games are often simple and inexpensive requiring little more than a pack of cards, dice or paper and pen.
Sudoku, which was originally called Number Place, is a great numeracy game. It is a logic based number-placement puzzle. The aim is to fill a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the grid contain all of the digits from 1 to 9. Sudoku comes in different levels of difficulty, depending on how much of the partially completed puzzle is filled in.
Sudoku puzzles are often free and can be found in newspapers, magazines, books and on-line. Anyone from nine to ninety nine can play Sudoku. You can turn a puzzle into a competition by timing the game with the winner being the first finished. Sudoku is great brain training and recommended as a way to keep your mind fast and sharp.
Here is a Sudoku puzzle for you to have a go at:

PDHPE and Sport Report
PDSSSC Tennis (Doubles)
On Friday 22nd May, Cerdon sent two teams (eight students) to the PDSSSC Tennis Championships. The girls started the day well, however, the day ended up being washed out. The team consisted of: Kajol Chand, Shelby Pahuta, Andrea Budini, Amira Abulahi, Tina Tran, Renee Kristiansen, Elizabeth Enright and Angelina Portolesi. The finals were played between Cerdon and Marian on Wednesday 27th after school. Special thanks to Tina Tran (Year 8) who stepped in when Shelby was sick and couldn’t play for her team. Congratulations to Kajol Chand (Year 8) who won all her matches, beating the number one ranked student from Marian, who is also a senior student. Special thanks to Mr Porter for giving up his time to train the team and take them to both competitions.
Year 8 Jump Rope for Heart
The Year 8 Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser was cancelled due to wet weather. Some Year 8 classes have completed their Jump Rope activity, whilst others will be completing their session next week. Special thanks to Mrs Deegan for coordinating this year’s Jump Rope event and to Year 8 students for fundraising for the National Heart Foundation. We will let everyone know how much money was raised soon.
PDSSSC Football
On the 28th May, Cerdon’s Open Soccer side competed against Xavier College in the Grand Final for the PDSSSC Football Championships. Our team started the game strongly, with some excellent passing and game play. Unfortunately, a lack of concentration for one minute cost us two goals and it was difficult to recover from this. Xavier were constantly hammering the ball at our goal, placing Melissa under constant pressure. She made many fine saves. Our defence worked tirelessly to keep out the Xavier attack. A brilliant goal by one of the Xavier players sealed the victory for their team. Cerdon were very graceful in their loss, beaten by an older, stronger and more aggressive team. Congratulations to all players. The team consisted of: Melissa Barron, Kaitlin Allan, Alexia Abou-Hamad, Jessie Finch, Megan Cuskelly, Catherine Le, Lauren Smith, Katerina Bonovas, Natasha Milakovic, Hayley Nolan, Jessica Stipic, Isabelle Stipic, Mariah Younan, Chantal Cassar, Charnel Rizk and Amelia Menouhos.
Individual Sports
Cerdon encourages students who excel in a chosen sport outside of the school to represent the College at NSWCCC level and beyond. Interested students are encouraged to talk to their PDHPE teacher about their capabilities and collect nomination forms from Ms MacKinnon. Students who represent the college at PDSSSC level are encouraged to access the website www.secondarysportparra.catholic.edu.au for information and the relevant nomination forms. If events are postponed due to wet weather, this information will be made available on the website.
Students can also register for individual representative teams in sports such as Netball, Diving, Cricket and many others at NSWCCC level. More information can be found at www.csss.nsw.edu.au. This website must be opened in Chrome (not Firefox or Explorer).

Whooping Cough Information
Usually 9 to 10 days (can range from 6 to 20 days).
Symptoms:
Starts with a running nose, followed by persistent cough that comes in bouts. Bouts maybe followed by vomiting and a whooping sound as the child gasps for air.
Do I need to keep my child home?
Yes, until the first 5 days of a special antibiotic have been taken.
How can I help prevent spread?
Immunisation at 2, 4, 6 months and 4 years of age. A particular antibiotic can be given for the patient and those that have been in close contact. The infected child should be excluded from childcare and school until 5 days after treatment begins. Unimmunised childcare attendees may be excluded from childcare unless they take the antibiotics.

Measles is a serious disease that is easily spread through the air. Immunisation is effective in preventing the disease. All children and adults born during or after 1966 should be vaccinated with 2 doses of measles containing vaccine if not already immune. Please download the Factsheet for further information.
