Hurricane Andrew!

Hurricane Andrew was one of the most powerful hurricanes that has hit South Florida. Hurricane Andrew hit South Florida and a little bit of Louisiana. It hit South Florida August 24, 1992. The property damage was $25 billion! That's A LOT of money! The sustained winds were 145 miles per hour and the wind gusts were 175 miles per hour. There was 26 deaths total and 150,000-250,000 people were left homeless. Approximately 126,000 homes and businesses were destroyed and impaired! A total of 1.5 million people were without power and some residents were 6 months without power! As you can see, Hurricane Andrew was a really devastating hurricane.

Some Interesting Facts!

1. Over forty miles of sand was stripped off the barrier islands off the coast of Louisiana which left coastal marsh exposed.

2. Hurricane Andrew was considered a Category 3 hurricane until data revealed that the wind speeds hit 157 miles per hour, which is the cutoff for a CATEGORY 5 hurricane!

3. Hurricane Andrew produced a 17-feet storm surge near the landfall point in Florida.
