Winter Water Consumption
We all know that colic is the number one noninfectious health risk for horses. There are a number of types of colic but the one we see the most in winter is impaction colic.
Impaction colic is essentially constipation and most often includes the accumulation of hard, dry fecal material in the colon. The usual signs of impending impaction colic are depression, a decreased appetite and decreased production and dryness of manure.
Decreased water consumption is thought to be the primary predisposing factor for the condition, especially in the winter when most horses drink less water.
Remember, that the average 1,200 –pound horse will drink seven to 10 gallons of water a day, so a five-gallon bucket of water twice a day is adequate in most cases unless the horse is exercising and sweating heavily.
The bottom line is to increase water consumption and decrease the likelihood of an impaction colic, provide warm water in the winter and prevent access to cold water. If you have any questions about preventing colic in your horse, your local AAEP-member veterinarian is always your best source of information.

Peaceful Ridge Rescue began in 2004 as a one-horse rescue by our founder and president Victor Cutino, and his wife Ann. Each ensuing year resulted in Victor being called upon to rescue a greater number of abused and abandoned horses. Today, municipal authorities and the South Florida community rely on Victor and his staff of dedicated volunteers to provide rescue, rehabilitation and adoption services to all equines in need. With a “mission to find a home for every horse” adoption is the ultimate goal and Peaceful Ridge Rescue has found new homes for over 100 horses during the last few years.

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.
Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.
One of the best ways to get involved is in your own community.
