The Raft
By: Emily Kehoe
Big Ideas
Some big ideas in my novel are survival and hope.
Theme
The theme of my story is never give up. This is my theme because Robie, the main character, has to survive on a raft at sea and on a stranded island. She has no food or fresh water. She always tells herself to keep going, even when it seems impossible.
Setting
The setting of my story is Hawaii, the ocean surrounding Hawaii, and an island. Without this setting there would be no story because if Robie didn't have to survive on a stranded island and alone at sea, there would be nothing to make the story interesting.
Characters
Below are characters who are a big part of this novel.
Robie
Robie is the main character of the story. She is determined to survive, curious to find ways to survive, kind, and scared of what might happen if she couldn't find a way to survive. Robie has dirty blonde, long hair and a nose ring.
Max
Max is the copilot on the plane when it crashes. He isn't in the story very long but you can tell that he is kind, as he saves Robie many times. That also shows he is caring. He is also very daring to save Robie instead of himself. Robie describes him having dark, short hair. She also says that he looks about 25 years old.
AJ (Aunt Jillian)
AJ is Robie's aunt. She is caring, loving and kind. She shows all this by making sure Robie is having fun. She also wants to make sure Robie is safe. AJ did a lot to try to figure out where Robie is and why. Robie says she is 30 years old, and has long, brown hair.
Event 1- Hawaii
Robie is in Hawaii visiting her aunt. This is a big event because with Robie being in Hawaii, it affects later events, that are key to the story.
Event 2- Plane Crash
Robie is on a plane trying to get back to her home. The plane she's on crashes and she is left stranded out at sea.
Event 3- The NOAA Rescues Robie
A boat comes to the island that Robie is on. On the boat, she becomes healthy again from the lack of food, water, and personal hygiene. Robie's parents and aunt learns she is safe.
Climax
The climax of the story is when the plane crashes because that leads up to major events that effect Robie. Her whole life changes.
Song
This song is "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus. It contributes to my book because it tells you that life is tough, and life will throw things at you. It also tells you to appreciate the little things in life. You will have struggles, but you need to push through them.
