Message from the Office!
Dear Parents,
A Spring-time Prayer
There is real wisdom, Lord, in the adage 'It is always Spring-time in the heart that loves God.' Springtime is a season of optimism and hope and the Christian lives a faith centered on hope. Winter, with its cold and dark days has gone just as Good Friday has passed to Easter and beyond.
We live a resurrection life reflected in the new life springing up around us.
Thank you, Lord for the hope that you bring, the renewal that you bring both to this world and to our hearts and lives.
God Bless

Indigenous Land Acknowledgment!
As many of you are aware, École OLPH reads the Territory and Land Acknowledgment during our school assemblies and meetings.
Over the past couple of years, we have been discussing the importance of this statement with staff and students and we would like to include our parent community in these discussions as well.
During the next several weeks, we will be sharing one small statement about why this is a necessary and important piece of who we are as united Canadian people moving towards reconciliation.
The statements are meant to not only be information pieces for you and your family but we are hoping that they will encourage discussion with your children as well. You will be able to easily identify the statement each week as it will be accompanied with the above photo.
Volunteers Needed for Track & Field Day!!!
Dear Parents,
Please review the attached document and return to the school office by Monday, April 29, 2019, if you are able to volunteer.

Linking Generations
Dear 2019-2020 School Partners,
Linking Generations is preparing for our upcoming 2019-2020 Volunteer Grandparent Program. I must share with you, that I am hearing many wonderful comments within the schools and within our community about this wonderful Intergenerational Program and the benefits to our teachers and students. I know that you and your teachers will enjoy the senior volunteer placements this fall.
Recruiting individuals to volunteer sometimes can be a bit difficult. If you could please insert a small notice in your school newsletters about our upcoming program in your school this fall, that would be wonderful. It will give parents a heads up about our program, however it may also assist us in recruiting our senior volunteers. I have included a small write that you may wish to use, along with Linking Generations logo ; if needed. Please feel free to make changes if necessary.
LINKING GENERATIONS will introduce The Volunteer Grandparent program at ( insert your school name) this fall! In readiness for this exciting program, Linking Generations will begin recruiting Senior Volunteers in May and June, who wish to connect with our students in our school classrooms. Seniors volunteers will enjoy the chance to share skills, knowledge & experience, while providing a valuable community service. The Linking Generations Volunteer Grandparent Program will work in partnership with Elk Island School Board and local groups to develop, place & support volunteers within the framework of the Grandparent Program. If you or a Senior Family member is interested in volunteering, please email Debbie Sinclair; Executive Director; Linking Generations at linkgendebbie@telus.net or check out Linking Generations website at www.linkinggenerations.ca
Thank you,
Sincerely,
Debbie Sinclair

Building Resiliency!
Hello Parents,
EICS and our schools are in midst of a lot of change!
Change can be stressful but it is also can be an adventure. How do we make this shift? How do we as adults support change/transition and the stress that comes with it to our children? Next year, we acknowledge that EPK's grade 4's will be naturally transitioning to OLPH, but also, OLPH will be shifting to a dual stream school.
On May 6th, EICS is hosting a parent presentation on building resiliency through change and we'd like to welcome you. Please see attached for more details.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to follow up with Mme Simone Moniz at simone.moniz@eics.ab.ca.

Talking with Your Teen about Vaping!!!
Dear OLPH Parents,
A couple of weeks ago, EICS and OLPH hosted a parent presentation on vaping. There was a lot of information offered and I certainly learned plenty.
A couple of the outstanding takeaway messages were how unregulated vapes/ecigs/modes and their "juices" are and what the serious short term side effects are of youth vaping. The industry is ever-evolving and what we are learning is how important it is to talk to our children (as young as grade 6) about drugs, peer influences and common myths about vaping (ie: it is a healthier option compared to cigarettes).
By opening the conversation in a non-judgmental way, our children/youth know that we are a trustworthy place for them to come to. Parents and other trusting family members are such a crucial part of the formula of this conversation. Attached is some tips for starting this conversation. (see picture below).
If you are wanting to know more information on vaping, feel free to contact Mme Moniz at simone.moniz@eics.ab.ca or directly at OLPH school.
Thanks,
Mme Simone Moniz

Sacraments Dates
As the dates get closer for the celebration of the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation get closer, I have received a number of phone calls from parents who are concerned because they have “missed the chance to register their child.”
The preparation time for these sacraments is complete for this 2018-2019 year BUT you have NOT “missed” the chance for your child to celebrate these sacraments.
Please join us in the fall of 2019 ~ I promise they will not be the only child in grade 3 or 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 preparing for First Reconciliation and First Communion nor will they be the only child older than grade 6 preparing for Confirmation!
Nothing has been “missed” and what has been gained is the opportunity to prepare your child in a way that is unrushed and meaningful for both of you.
Please watch the Parish website at www.olph.ca under sacraments for our updates on sacrament information.
The registration dates in the fall are Monday, September 23 at 7:00pm at OLPH Parish for First Reconciliation and First Communion and Monday September 30 at 7:00pm at OLPH Parish for Confirmation.
We look forward to meeting you and your children in the fall! If you have any question please contact Raylene at 780-467-5470 or at ryuzyk@olph.ca.

FundScrip Fundraising
Dear Parents,
OLPH School Council has been using FundScrip for the last 5 years as one of the schools main fundraisers.
FundScrip, is a fundraising program that lets you raise funds simply by purchasing gift cards for your everyday shopping (i.e. groceries, gas, gifts and household items). When you purchase a $100 grocery gift card, you receive the $100 card, but in addition, a percentage is donated to our fundraising campaign. It’s like getting free money, where the only catch is you have to change your method of payment to using gift cards!
Please visit https://www.fundscrip.com/ to place your on-line order(s). To print off a paper order form, please click on the attached document below.
How to Support our École OLPH FundScrip Group
1. Go to www.fundscrip.com and click on Support a Group
2. Complete the information in the Become a Supporter section and be sure to enter École OLPH's group Invitation Code: PETQYC

4. Click the link in the confirmation email and complete your registration.
