Kindergarten Registration is OPEN!
Do you have a student ready to start Kindergarten in August 2023? Bennington Elementary is currently accepting registrations for any incoming Kindergarten students. If your child will be eligible for Kindergarten (age 5 by July 31, 2023) please visit our district website www.benningtonschools.org and click on "Enroll New Student" to register for the upcoming school year, and be sure to select the 2023-2024 school year.
Determining the enrollment for the next year is important for future staff planning. Completing registration also ensures that you receive communication regarding kindergarten. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
Kindergarten Roundup for students will take place at the conclusion of summer prior to the start of the school year. More information will be sent on this at a later date. If you have any questions regarding enrollment, please call Mrs. Lehman in our school office.

Bennington Public Schools
Emergency School Closing Information
(Policy 602.03)
There may be occasions when attending school due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances may not be advisable. Student safety and learning is always the top priority for Bennington Public Schools. The District will either cancel school for the day or announce a two-hour late start.
School closings will be announced using the following media sources listed below:
- Television: KMTV, WOWT, KETV
- Radio: KFAB (AM 1110), KKAR (AM1290)
- School Messenger
When school is closed due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances, Bennington Public Schools will make efforts to make up these educational opportunities. The District has embedded days into the school calendar for such occasions. Make-up days for the 2022-2023 school term are scheduled for March 10, May 25 and May 26 if needed.
Late start days will begin exactly two hours later than the normal school start time. When weather permits for a later start, the streets, sidewalks and parking lots can be better cleared and rush hour traffic can be completed. Late start days will be announced in the same manner as school closings.
Late Start FAQ
Why are we having a late start day?
In the event of inclement weather, the District may delay the start of the school day by two hours. By starting two hours later, this allows for streets, sidewalks and parking lots to be cleared and for rush hour traffic to be complete.
What is the school scheduling time for students on a late start day?
- Elementary - 10:05 AM to 3:07 PM
- Middle School - 10:00 AM to 3:10 PM
- High School - 10:10 AM to 3:17 PM
Will transportation be provided on a late start day?
Yes, transportation will be provided and stop times will be modified and will be running approximately two hours later to get students to school for the two-hour late start.
Will the District provide supervision if I drop off my child(ren) at school early on a late start day?
No, staff is not on duty and students are not permitted to enter the buildings before a designated time. Remember, the District will announce a late start to allow authorities and school personnel time to clear roads, sidewalks and parking lots for safe travel.
Will students be required to attend extracurricular activities on late start days?
Before school and/or morning extracurricular activities (sports, clubs, and groups) will be canceled on late start days. After school activities will proceed as scheduled.
Will preschool students attend on late start days?
There will be no morning preschool on a late start day. Afternoon preschool will be scheduled as normal with normal transportation.
Will the All-Star Kids program be affected by late start days?
Yes, for students enrolled in the All-Star Kids program that have an enrollment category that includes morning care. The hours of operation will be 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM at all locations. Breakfast will be served around 9:45 AM.
Will there be breakfast and lunch on late start days?
Yes to both. A grab & go breakfast will be offered. Lunch will run at the similarly scheduled time. Check your building's website for the exact times.
Will students have to make up instructional time lost on a late start day?
No, Bennington Public Schools builds extra hours into the school calendar every year. Late starts will not significantly affect the District’s ability to schedule school days to meet the Nebraska Department of Education’s requirements.
Bundle Up! Cold weather is here!
We don't have a set temperature for when we take the children out to recess or keep them in, but we use 20 degrees as general guideline. Wind chill, or "feels like" temperature, is a factor too. Please send your children to school prepared to go outside each and every day.
Once snowy weather arrives, children are allowed to bring their snow pants, boots, hats, and gloves and those who have them will be allowed to go into the snow. Children who do not bring their boots and snow clothes will not be allowed to enter the snowy areas. We do not want students' shoes or clothing to become wet.
Too sick for school?
It seems that cold and flu season is already upon us.
In deciding whether your child should come to school, please keep the following guidelines in mind. Any child with these symptoms should NOT come to school:
- Fever of 100 or higher; children should not return to school until fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication
- Vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours
Please establish and encourage healthy habits with your children to help prevent the spread of illness at school.
- Teach children to wash hands thoroughly with soap for at least 20 seconds. Handwashing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of disease
- Provide healthy foods and plenty of water, please make sure to send a water bottle with your student to school every day
- Ensure your child gets plenty of rest and engages in physical activity
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
- Keep your child home if they are sick, and avoid contact with sick individuals
Thank you for your help in keeping our students and staff healthy!

General Announcements
To ensure the safety of our students and staff. Please drop your children off and have them walk in the building with their classmates. The doors will be unlocked for breakfast, walking club and reading club at 7:45. The children not doing a club or getting breakfast will be escorted in by a staff member at their designated time. No parents will be allowed in the building unless signed into the office.
Safety Patrol: The 5th Grade Safety Patrol Program is an important service for getting our students to school safely. With cold weather definitely here, we want to provide guidelines when student safety patrol will be on duty. Student patrol members will report for duty if the wind chill remains at or above 20 degrees. When the wind chill drops below 20 degrees, only the adult patrol members will report to duty.
