Principal's message
Hello and welcome back from what I hope was a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving break! I wanted to send an update to our community on the status of our construction plans here at Lum. We expect to start on our fencing project sometime in January. We will do our best to minimize the disruption to our classrooms during this process. As I write this Bear Facts edition to you, I am waiting for the 2nd meeting of our Site Architecture Design team to start. We have a small team of parents, staff, district officials and architects meeting to plan out Phase 2 of the Measure I bond improvements to our school! We will be adding some permanent new buildings to our campus, creating some new outdoor learning areas, and changing some of the layout of our campus. I just created a page on the Lum webpage, under the Parents tab, called "Construction updates." Please check here for minutes of our first meeting. I will send out a Remind text when I upload the minutes from our meeting tonight. Lastly, we are hoping to have a community meeting to share the final plans before the January 18th PTA meeting - around 5:30 or so. Please mark your calendars to come and hear the exciting developments!
Lastly, I have over 230 parents following me on Remind. Remind is an opt-in messaging service where I can send you important text messages straight to your phone. Please join our class by sending a text to the number 81010 with the message @LumBears. You will be automatically added to my class, and will get updates like the one I mentioned above! You don't have to download the app unless you want to J.
Take care Lum Bears. Talk soon…

Office News
Here’s hoping all of you enjoyed fall break as much as your rejuvenated Lum staff did!
Pennies for Pajamas: This worthwhile fundraiser will run 12/1/16 – 12/15/16. Please note that, as well as pennies, we will take monetary donations of any denomination to help fund the cause. With the funds collected, the local Midway Shelter will be one of the homeless shelters we’ll be helping. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
PTA NEWS
Reflections Art Program Winners: Congratulations to our Lum Bears who submitted creative and beautiful artwork for our annual Reflections Art Program!! PTA appreciates the families' support of this program by encouraging your children to participate and completing the paperwork. The entries included amazing drawings, paintings, collages, photography, and literature by children in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Although PTA would love to have all of the pieces move forward to the city-wide program, but only 1 entry from each category can move forward. We are so proud of all of the participants: Ain C; Ananya K, Enzo M, Fisher T, Haley W, Hana K, Kylie Z, and Tarek K. These entries will be moving on to the city-wide judging in early January:
Visual Arts, Primary Division: Dawit Chong, 1st grade
Visual Arts, Intermediate Division: Niranjana Kumar, 3rd grade
Photography, Intermediate Division: August Welter, 3rd grade
Literature, Intermediate Division: Althea Welter, 5th grade
Fire Up Your Feet Winner: Lum placed 2nd in the fall Fire Up Your Feet Challenge and was awarded $1,000!! Thank you so much to the many families and staff who tracked their physical activity. We get another chance to win 1st place in the spring challenge April 15-May 15. Keep up the great work staying active and healthy!
Feet First Friday: Spend every Friday morning with your Lum pals on your way to school. Walk, bike, scooter or roll to school with your children and your neighbors. Enjoy a dance hula hoop party on the yard when you arrive 8:10-8:20 am. Feet First Fridays are a great opportunity to promote exercise, to foster non-motorized commuting, and to spend fun active time with our children.
Annual Food Drive: Just a couple more weeks for Lum’s Canned Food Drive. If you can, please send non-perishable canned food items to school with your student between now and December 12th. You or your student can deposit your canned food donation in the red barrel outside the Lum office. Please do not place any glass containers in the Food Bank barrel. In particular the Food Bank urgently needs Beef Stew (20-24 oz), Canned Fruit (15 oz), Chili with Beef (15 oz), Canned Tuna (6 oz), Canned Corn (15 oz), and Rice (1 lb. packages). To participate in the Canned Food Drive by making a financial donation online, follow this link https://www.vfd-accfb.org/grouphome.aspx?ID=6399.
DONATE AT FAMILY FUN NIGHT ON 12/9/16 AND GET A SWEET TREAT!!
Coffee with the Principal: Join Principal Woodward and fellow Lum families for PTA’s Coffee with the Principal on Friday, December 9th, following Morning Message. Enjoy a cup of coffee and visit with your friends. Learn more about what’s happening at Lum! Smaller siblings welcome.
Family Fun Night: Everyone is invited to a fun evening of games and puzzles for all Lum families. On Friday, December 9th, 6:00-7:30 pm, in the MPR, Lum PTA will host Games and Puzzles Family Fun Night. Bring your family’s favorite board/card games and puzzles and challenge each other! Pack a dinner or purchase pizza for just $1/slice. Complimentary beverages and popcorn provided by PTA. Don’t forget something sweet–buy dessert from the Bake Sale. Individually-wrapped baked goods can be delivered to the school office during the day or bring directly to the event. See you for the fun! Donate an item to the Food Drive and receive 1 delicious Bake Sale treat!
Amazon.LumPTA.com: Have you started your holiday shopping? Don’t forget to shop at www.Amazon.LumPTA.com. A portion of your purchase is donated to Lum PTA. With lots of shopping for many Lum Bears, that’s a lot of donations to help fund field trips, purchase Chromebooks and art supplies, and support PTA programs like Homework Club and Science Fair! Tell your family, your friends and neighbors—everyone can support Lum PTA.
Sports Basement Fundraising Program: Earn money for Lum at Sports Basement by becoming a Basementeer! Sports Basement’s “loyalty” program is a win-win for their loyal customers and our community: 10% off every item every day AND 10% of profits back to Donald Lum Elementary School. There is no fee for our school families, as long as you register by December 31, 2016. Thereafter, a one-time $25 fee will be applied for membership. On your next visit to Sports Basement, register as a Basementeer and select Donald Lum Elementary School as your beneficiary!

2016-2017 Volunteer Requirements
We appreciate all our volunteers and what they do for Lum School. We thank you for your cooperation with AUSD Volunteer policies, as outlined below:
1. Volunteers must complete a volunteer agreement form each year and provide a copy of their driver’s license/passport to the office. (Volunteer agreement forms in office.)
2. Principal Woodward will perform a search of the Department of Justice website (Megan’s Law).
3. If you will be regularly volunteering in a classroom, or elsewhere at the school, the school will need a clear TB test result.
4. If you will be driving on any field trips, working unsupervised with students, or spending the night on overnight field trips, you must be fingerprinted. In addition, when driving, the required driver’s insurance coverage must be provided. (Insurance coverage forms in office.)
5. Fingerprinting instructions are outlined below, and fingerprints must be cleared at least a week prior to the field trip. This process may take up to a month, so start well in advance of the field trip:
a. Pick up a Livescan form and suggested Livescan locations list from the Lum office.
b. Arrange for fingerprinting with the Alameda Police Dept. or another facility on the locations list. Pay the required fees to the fingerprint facility.
c. Have fingerprints taken and return the Live Scan form to AUSD Human Resources.
d. Human Resources will inform the office when the prints have cleared.
e. Once fingerprints are taken, they are good for life!
We truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication shown from our Lum volunteers.
