The Sky Needs Stars
Nudge: Roberts Middle School Volume 1
Dear Roberts,
What is the Roberts Story? I start with this question to explain that what matters most will never be at the mercy of things that matter least. We will always put first things first. The Roberts Story is about creating an environment where our work family will always be our number one priority. The most important thing is to keep the most important thing, the most important thing. This means that WE are all about developing future leaders. Roberts is a school where title does not matter. Roberts is a school where position does not equal power. Nothing at Roberts is Somebody Else's Problem. You are responsible for everything that affects you.
At Roberts, we don’t hyper focus about accountability, but ownership. This is why you don’t see me meet with you about your scores. Yes, we do track data, but for personal and professional growth. We coach at this school. We have amazing instructional coaches that will support and intervene. Brian Moran defines accountability as, “simply taking ownership of one’s actions and results.” Ownership is a willingness to own your actions and results regardless of the circumstances.
What do we teach at Roberts? We teach that our actions are always an outgrowth of our thinking. If the thinking shifts, so does the action. We are laser focused on being intentional about where you spend your time for personal growth. Our one instructional focus is still small group instruction. This year we will push you further with small group instruction. We continuously peel back the layers of small group to focus on what matters most. Our personal desire is for you to operate on the edges of your ability to push yourself to greatness.
What can you expect from my administrative team? We are here to serve you. We will lead by our actions and model the way. We are driven by our “why” as leaders. You are what matters most at Roberts, and by our actions, you will see. Teaching is a noble and worthy profession, and we intend to develop you to be the best. Though we may not be perfect, know our intentions are to support. Please don’t forget that love for humanity is one of the key values of Roberts. Thank you for being a part of OUR story—The Roberts Story! All that being said, Welcome back home!

2018 - 2019 Instructional focus
This Year We Will Be Focused On Systematically Intervening When Students Struggle.
“There is no one step that does it. It’s a lot of little steps.”
Instructionally, we have been taking lots of little steps focusing on pulling small groups based on real-time data. Last year, we went one step further to personalize the instruction that occurs within small groups. This year we will be focused on systematically intervening when students struggle.
Why systematically? Last year we discussed that in order to reach ALL of our students, those who struggle and those who excel, we must personalize instruction within small groups and while intervening. A large portion of our staff development when we return will focus on continuing to grow in using real-time data to personalize small group instruction and systematically intervening when students struggle. We will continue to use the X spreadsheet this year, across all content areas, to systematically intervene during Destination Time. As always, the Peer Facilitators will provide continued support throughout the year.
We’ve been on the same set of stairs each year taking little steps towards reaching ALL students and this year we have added a 4th step to continue our growth toward all means ALL! Lean on your colleagues. Lean on your Peer Facilitators. Lean on administration. If you stumble on a step, we will be there to pick you up, so we can ALL reach that top step together.
