Skyland Peek at the Week
Week of October 28 - November 1
Why I love our job!
As Mrs. Coggins was loading her bus, a third grade came to her in a panic and told her she had to take this bag right now because it absolutely had to go to the homeless today. Mrs. Coggins told the student okay and took the bag. See the pictures below for what was found in the bag.
This sweet child had told her teacher that she was collecting food for the homeless, but not to worry because it was during their spare time. Well, it seems that she had been collecting leftover snacks and food and wrapping them up in paper (like Christmas presents) to give to the homeless. The items just happened to be yogurt, milk, and half eaten cookies. She also had some "jelwe" (jewelry) that had a necklace and a bracelet from the Cherokee field trip (even though I am 99% certain she didn't have any money to buy anything on that trip, which means she is essentially Robin Hood, stealing for the poor). I think the one that pushed our laughter over the edge was the "pesarsbill...Don't Eat" with the sucked on jelly beans.
Here is what I learned from this hilarious experience:
1. The word "people" needs to be on everyone's spelling word list this week.
2. I think our students might have a misunderstanding of what the word perishable means.
3. I absolutely adore Southern phonetic spelling.
4. Children have incredibly big hearts and are so capable of spreading kindness in our world if we as adults would just get out of their way. Even if it means sharing their half eaten cookie with the homeless.
5. How lucky are we to work in a job that allows us to see these amazing things on a daily basis, but only if we are willing to accept the bag of trash from the panicked child as they get on the bus?
Have a wonderful week!

Reminder from the Sunshine Committee (Repeat)
The Sunshine Committee is very excited about our upcoming Christmas Party. We will send out more info after Veterans Day. We would also love to know about any upcoming surgeries that are scheduled, babies on the way, or if you loose a loved one. Please let your team leader or one of the committee members know so we are able to bring some sunshine to your world. The members are Kathy Ensley, Stephanie Cannon, and myself.
4th and 5th grade teachers (Repeat)
On Thursday, October 24 the Greenville Symphony EdReach String Quartet will perform for our 4th and 5th graders at 8:30 AM in the cafeteria. The performance should last about 45 minutes. Teachers are asked to bring their students at 8:25. Please plan to stay and supervise your class.
Weekly Flyers (Repeat)
We are hoping this will help not only the help the number of things you are receiving to send home, but also help with how many times you are having to pack folders with different flyers during the week.
There may be emergency situations that we have to send something home on a day other than Monday, but we are going to try our best to stick to sending flyers home on only Monday! We will communicate if there is a flyer that needs to be sent home immediately.

Grades 3-5: The Masteryconnect benchmark window will be open from Wednesday, Oct. 30-Friday, November 8. Please plan to test students early in the window to ensure that all absent students are made up before the window closes. Please start early in the day so that all students can finish in one school day. Only students who are sick/have early dismissals should continue a test on the following day.
Late finishers will stay with you on test
ing days and make-ups will be administered in the classroom.
While this is not considered a "high-stakes" test, please offer your students the same testing conditions that you do any other assessment. Please see Kim or Lynne if you have any questions. Accommodations are outlined on p. 13 of the implementation guide.
Please make sure students submit their test once they've completed it. Ask them not to press the back button or refresh during their test. If a connectivity issue occurs and the student gets knocked off, please have them log back into the test using their test ID. All submitted answers should be saved.
Please do not preview benchmark material with your students prior to testing.
A copy of the district's Masteryconnect implementation guide can be found in my google classroom or by using this link. Please let me know if you have any questions.
