Preschool News
Dear Families and Friends,
Happy Winter Solstice (almost)! It's hard to believe that 2021 has almost come to an end. “Solstice” will be our word of the week this week.
Once again, we thank you for all your support so far this school year. Children have enjoyed being together and socializing (safely), engaging in learning activities, sharing stories, and having a regular routine. This week we will be mostly focusing on snow, snowflakes, and snowmen (with a little glitter sprinkled here-and-there). When we return to school in January our theme will be Earth, Moon, and Sun.
For a copy of this week’s activities, please click on the following link:
Important information and Reminders:
- December 24th – January 2nd – Winter Break, no school
- Friday, January 7th – no school for preschool students
- Monday, January 17th – Martin Luther King Day – no school
- The cold weather is here! Please try to label your child’s outer wear with their names or initials to avoid mix-ups with articles of clothing. We do go outside unless extreme weather prevents us from doing so.
Have a great week!
We wish you all a happy and healthy winter break!

Second Grade News
Second Graders will be celebrating Gingerbread Week during the days prior to vacation. Our Reading and Literature focus for the week will include FUN lessons, based on the The Gingerbread Man, that will address the following Massachusetts State Standards:
RL 2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
RL 2.2 Retell stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.
RL 2.3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges
RL 2.7 Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
RL 2.9 Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story by different authors or from different cultures.
* More information about a special activity will be coming from your child’s classroom teacher!
3rd Grade News
Dear Families of Room 6b,
Writing: This week the students have been working on the middle portions of their essays, which we refer to as ‘mini-stories.’ Each mini story is trying to prove the thesis statement that students developed last week. We are also working on an introduction and conclusion. The second draft of the essays will be typed in Google Docs and printed.
Math: Next week we will have our unit assessment on multiplication. Over the course of the past month and a half, the students have learned numerous strategies that can be used to solve a variety of multiplication problems. I always encourage the students to show work whenever possible so that I can see their thought process. After December break we'll begin work on geometry, specifically working on area and perimeter.
Science: We are wrapping up a science unit on magnets this week and next. Ask your child for details about what they have learned about magnets. When we return to school in January we will switch over to a social studies unit.
Heifer International Donation: We'll be deciding as a class tomorrow what item(s) to donate based on the amount of money we've collected. I will accept donations through tomorrow and will add in a donation of my own to get to an amount that can match the prices on the Heifer website. So far, we have collected well over $100!!!
Academic Websites: I’m sending home login information for Lexia, Reflex Math, and Symphony Math. The login info is on a manila paper, so look for it in students’ folders. Using websites at home isn't required, but would definitely help students make progress in reading and math.
Seasonal Holiday Attire: Next week I am encouraging students to wear any seasonal attire they would like to school. This can be interpreted in different ways, so I’m looking forward to what students wear to school!
Sincerely,
Nate Thomas
