Core Values Assembly
Every month, North Street students and staff focus on a different core value, derived from a list that was developed by our staff. This past month, the students of Ms. Russo's and Mrs. Selissen's classes collaborated to teach the whole school about tolerance. Several parts of a definition were shared, including being accepting of others’ opinions and beliefs, being patient and forgiving, being kind to people who are different than you, and being supportive to everybody. There are posters displayed around the school, created by students, that displays images of tolerance in different settings, such as the lunchroom, during math, and at recess. During the presentation, students played Simon Says to engage the audience in identifying tolerant behavior, and the presenters played a game of Family Feud to teach the concept. The cheers when the theme song began playing was truly energizing! There is a link to the slideshow they presented to the school on our website. Click under the top "News" tab and then to "Core Values Assemblies."
Folk Dancing Days
The weather made it challenging, but we expect all classes will have kicked up their heels by the end of the month! Families, friends, and students did a wonderful job teaching and learning dances from around the world. A special thanks to our music teacher, Ms. Bridgford, for all her hard work and patience running this terrific event.
Flu Season
Flu season certainly hit North Street this month! Our custodians and teachers put in extra cleaning and sanitizing efforts to help maintain as clean an environment as possible. We appreciate your support as well - it is imperative for your child's good health as well as the health of other children and staff that a return to school after an illness occurs when the child is free of fever and other intestinal problems. Please refer to the student handbook and the picture below for further clarification.
North Street PAC
We are so blessed to work with such a creative and involved PAC! Here are some highlights from February's PAC meeting:
- The PACs of all four elementary schools have collaborated to plan the first Tewksbury Parents' Night Out! Parents/Guardians from the Heath Brook, Dewing, North Street, and Trahan Schools will gather together to play a Family Feud style game show night! $20 per person OR reserve a table for 10 adults for $150. Mark your calendars for February 27th 7pm-11pm (show starts at 7:30pm) at the Tewksbury Country Club.
- The fourth grade has chosen a field trip to the See Science Center, and the third grade is still in the planning phase. The PAC will help defray the cost of the trips.
- Read Across America is the first week of March. The school will celebrate with a different dress-up theme each day, as well as some activities and guest readers. The PAC is looking into a reading challenge to help support students' reading habits.
- The PACs of the Dewing and North Street voted to merge. We think this will simplify voting and the sharing of information. The bank accounts of the two schools will remain separate.
School Council
At our February meeting, we continued our work of creating a template regarding safety procedures for substitutes. We also began brainstorming ways for the whole staff to communicate efficiently in case of an evacuation. Detective Gonzalez from the Tewksbury Police Department was in attendance, and provided great insight and guidance during our discussion. Although we have begun our work together, we are always ready to welcome new members to our group. If you are interested in joining School Council, please email me at the address below.
