Design Team Retreat: January 30-February 1
In our own work as the MLA Design Team, we answered the following questions:
- What is "our work" as the Design Team?
- What are our key areas of focus and goals as a team?
Here is a link to a one-page summary of the work we completed during the retreat.
Our next Design Team meeting is on Tuesday, February 11 from 3:30-5:30pm.
20-21 Updates
- In January, we met with OUSD Board Member Shanthi Gonzalez to share our facilities non-negotiables for both the Sherman and Maxwell sites.
- Since that meeting, the following facilities projects have been put in motion:
- -- Sherman: fixing the storm drain, cleaning the boiler, fixing the thermostats, replacing the pad on the play structure.
- -- Maxwell: accepting bids to replace the boiler
- We are continuing to meet with the District to participate in walk-throughs on both sites to identify and plan for spring and summer facilities work. Some of our short-term priorities include identifying shade and cooling solutions on both campuses.
- Want to help? See the "Lobby Visit Plan" below!
Hiring: The hiring committee had our kick-off meeting last Thursday, February 6. As positions become available, we will be posting them online. So far, we know we will be hiring the following roles. Please share with your networks so we can find the best teammates possible!
- (20-21) TK-2 Bilingual Special Education Teacher for Mild to Moderate Disabilities
- (20-21) TK-2 Bilingual Special Education Aide
- (20-21) 2nd Grade Bilingual Teacher
Enrollment: The first enrollment window for the 2020-2021 school year has closed. Prospective students will receive offers in mid-March. If you have questions about enrollment, please ask Sheila or Maria at the front desks.
Family Focus Groups: MLA will host family focus groups on Thursday, February 20, as part of our mid-year review, hosted by Expeditionary Learning and the Design Team. The Focus Groups will give families an opportunity to share overall strengths and growth areas of the MLA experience, along with core concerns and excitement surrounding our expansion. If you are able to join a morning focus group between 10am and 12pm, please email Bri at brianne.zika@ousd.org to express your interest and availability.
Ways to Support MLA
Donate to MLA
Cada Familia
Our PTSA needs the support of cada familia through a monthly donation. For just $5 a month, you can play a critical role in ensuring our students have access to field trips, the arts, and after school programming. Click on the donation link to donate (above).
MLA Spring Auction
- The online auction will run February 24 - March 9 at 10 PM.
- Our goal this year is to raise $40,000. TOGETHER we can do this!
- We are asking that each family donate at least ONE item or service, or ask THREE local businesses to donate items, gift certificates, or services to the MLA online auction this year.
- Please let us know by Monday, February 10th what you and your family will be contributing. Now is the time to get started!
How: Fill out Donation Forms (English Form or Spanish Form) to describe each donation fully, and email them to mlasubasta@gmail.com, or drop them off at the Maxwell office. OR complete the online donation form.
- Here is a sample letter you can use to ask local businesses for donations (feel free to spruce it up and make it your own):

Power Hour
Come to the Maxwell campus every Wednesday morning to support teachers with classroom tasks!
PTSA Grants Committee.
We are looking to develop a team of MLA supporters to help write grant proposals for the school. As we grow to two campuses, we will need to target resources to ease this expansion. We have a couple of projects that could use your grant writing skills. If you are interested, please contact Ursula Aldana at mlaptavicepresident@gmail.com
MLA Volunteer and Visiting Policy
