Reading Workshop
This week has been exciting! We began our second unit of study on nonfiction. Second graders will dig a little deeper with nonfiction text features. Why do books include these elements? How does it help authors organize their information? Why do authors write nonfiction book? These are some of the discussions that will take place during this unit.
S-T-A-M-I-N-A! Reading stamina! As second graders at this point in the year, students should be able to sustain a 35 minute uninterrupted reading time. This will be a focus at parent teacher conferences this year. How is your child doing with independent work time and reading stamina? We look forward to sharing with you!
Writing Workshop
This week, we launched a new writing unit. We are creating a Buddy Biography. Students are partnered up and will interview another child in the classroom. They will write a biography about that child and even create a portrait in art class. We cannot wait to share these with you at our Second Grade Showcase in March!
Language Workshop
Our theme for unit 5 is Investigation. We will read books about the investigation process and famous inventors, such as Ada Lovelace, Ben Franklin, and Cleonardo. Students will have the opportunity to think about biographies in a whole new, exciting way!
Math Workshop
This week, we finished our unit on telling time. The second grade standard is telling time to the five-minute interval. Many students pushed past this and learned time by the minute! Some even touched upon elapsed time. Keep this skill current at home by having your child use an analog clock to tell time.
February Birthdays
Bracelet Sales & Hope Center Visit
We are so proud of these second graders! Not only did they learn about the economic process of supply and demand, but they raised money for the Hope Center in Waukesha! We donated an amazing $472 by selling our bracelets. Mr. Ralph came in to accept our check today. A special thank you to all who bought bracelets and helped us raise money. Way to go second graders! You are all amazing!
Valentine's Day
What creative second graders we have! The boxes they designed were adorable. Students enjoyed passing out valentines cards to their friends. What a sweet week!
Parent Teacher Conferences
It is that time of year! Parent teacher conferences are here! Please sign up for a 15 minute meeting slot with your child's homeroom teacher. NOTE: For spring conferences, we are asking that only parents attend. No children this time around. If you need to have your child in school, please have them remain in the library or in the hallway with a book or iPad during the conference. Thank you!
