Room 105 Happenings
January 14, 2016
This week...
Language Arts: students are working on writing informational pieces and changing singular nouns to plurals, which can prove very tricky!
Math: measurement has been the focus this week.
Reading: students are working to identify the main idea, main character, and key details in a story.
Word Wall practice: students practiced identifying and using other, many, look, more, and would in reading and writing.
Science: we have been working on a project to support our math area of measurement this week.
MaKeRsPaCe FUN!
Our students have been showing kindness in class and throughout the school. When we recognize a random act of kindness, we move a kindness flower from one vase to the next. As a celebration for showing so much kindness, Mrs. Appling, our Media Center Specialist, invited our class to use the HC STEAM Academy MakerSpace. Tomorrow, we will be going to use the MakeyMakey (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfQqh7iCcOU), pattern blocks, Legos, Play-Doh, and Snap Circuits (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDpLvUghfBg). I can't wait to see kids learn, create, and celebrate!
Pasta Towers
For math and science this week the students participated in a pasta tower challenge. Students measured out materials and worked in small groups to attempt to create the largest free-standing structure.
After finishing, we measured and compared the structures.
Collaboration
Students discuss the best plan of action for creating the tallest tower.
Guidelines
Measuring
A student measures out 1 yard of string for his group's structure.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
This week we are studying Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition to talking about his life and ways he changed our world, we took on the challenge of thinking about our future, our big dreams, and how to achieve them. Ask your student about what they learned this week!
Don't forget we have Monday off to continue celebrating his life and contributions!
