FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL:
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
The Columbian Exchange
The Columbian Exchange is the transfer of people, products, and ideas between the Hemispheres. Students in Mrs. Yaffee's 7th Grade class were broken up into two groups, the Old World and the New World. They were then given products to trade with the other group and the objective was to end the trade with better items than you started with. During this simulation students from the Old World had small X's on the back of their cards to symbolize the diseases that were unknowingly passed from the Old World to the New World. The students then reveal their new items and we discuss how their lives improved because of this trade. It is then revealed that New World group members that have a card with an X on the back of it have contracted an Old World disease that they have no immunity to, and they have to give up their goods. Then the class discussed again whether their lives improved or not. The students in the Old World still see improvement, while the New World decided they had it better before the trade. Students then connected it to their lives today by accessing which of their favorite foods they would not have today without this exchange!
