The Communications Department here at CHPS is going to be giving AAPI CHHS students a platform this month to speak on their AAPI history hero for AAPI Heritage Month. There will be features on the @chpsisd13 Instagram and the district Facebook pages with the student stories and photos throughout the month.

Thanhtruc Mai | Tammy Duckworth

CHHS Student Thanhtruc Mai chose to recognize Tammy Duckworth for her AAPI Hero for AAPI Heritage Month

Tammy Duckworth is a United States Senator from Illinois and a retired Army National Guard Lieutenant Colonel. She was the first female double amputee from the Iraq War when her helicopter was hit, causing her to lose both legs. She later was elected to the US House of Represenatives and then elected to the US Senate in 2016. She is the first Thai American woman elected into Congress, the first person born in Thailand elected to Congress, the first woman with a disability elected to Congress, the first female double amputee in the Senate and the first senator to give birth while in office. Duckworth is the second of three Asian American women to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Truc picked Tammy because seeing someone who looks like her in such a position of power to make change is inspiring. Her journey as an immigrant to the US, a soldier, a survivor and a strong woman in power is so important to have known. Usually Asian women are not seen in these types of positions, and having representation in that high of an office is amazing.

"Seeing someone who looks so much like you working hard to make a change, after going through so much is truly inspiring. Tammy is the definition of resilience." - Thanhtruc Mai

Drake Pham | Tai Pham

CHHS Student Drake Pham chose to recognize his father, Tai Pham, as his AAPI Hero for AAPI Heritage Month

Drake thought of his father right away when asked about an Asian American hero. Drake's father Tai was born in Vietnam and escaped the country as a refugee of war at the age of 13, with his brother. Tai and his siblings were split up all over the world after being in the refugee camps in Cambodia. Tai finally made it to the US to live in a foster home in Marshall, MN. Because of the family that raised him, he was able to finish high school, attend Augustana University and now works at the University of Minnesota as a Senior Financial Advisor. Drake is inspired everyday by his father's work ethic and drive. He made it to the US by fighting to get out, and then worked hard to make a life in Minnesota.

"He truly beat the odds. He worked hard and fought to make it to where he is today. He set such a wonderful example for me on how, no matter what, you can get to where you want as long as you put in the work." - Drake Pham
