A Message from the Director
TVA Families,
Did you know that Labor Day was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century? The activism of this time period fought for better working conditions and wages for all employees. These acts were often met with resistance and led to violence. In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. Initially known as a "workingmen's' holiday" the day has grown to be much more. Eventually, Labor Day weekend also symbolized the end of summer for many Americans, and is often celebrated with parties, street parades and athletic events.
We are reminded this weekend of the sacrifices that others have made to help us have and hold jobs with limits. We also recognize that we live in a time period when those limits are being tested. The age of technology has changed how and when we work and communicate with each other regarding work and school matters.
For us the message of labor day is about life and balance. For our TVA students where we live and where we learn and two places. It is important that as educators and families we are supporting our students in making healthy decisions regarding the balance between the two roles we play in one space. Being a student is our "job" for many of our students. The gift of TVA is the ability to remove stresses often placed on us by the schedule and time of traditional school. What is the structure for school in the home? How is balances reached between life and school? How does your household make sure that there are limits to both so there is success in both?
We hope you enjoy your Labor Day weekend and chance to find balance. We look forward to seeing many if not all of you in our offices on Tuesday for Onsite Day and/or school pictures.
Sincerely,
Mr. Kevin Zeck & the TVA Staff
Each week we will showcase TVA Students of the Week. Students are chosen based on their online performance with staying on pace and making good academic progress. We are excited to celebrate our student successes and we hope this helps you also connect in some ways as well.
Kyle Hartley - TVA Student of the Week
Kyle is a senior in TVA having been with TVA since the Fall of 2021. Kyle has a passion for computers often restoring them including 2 older computers from his childhood, a 2003 Gateway 450ROG and a 2006 COMPAQ. He relishes the opportunity to work with these older devices to play games and have authentic experiences to prepare him for a future working with computers. When asked why he joined TVA Kyle stated "I chose to go with TVA because it gives me the flexibility to do school assignments on my own time, without the fast-paced atmosphere of a traditional classroom. I started when the program began, as when it comes to technology, I am always up to try something new, and this
has worked wonders for me." Kyle plans to be a mid-year grad with TVA as part of the class of 2023.
