this is your one chance to summit the biggest mountain in the world! If you're one of the 25,000 annual Everest tourists, getting into Nepal for more than a three-day stay will only run you $30. But that's just the beginning of the tab. If you want to climb one of the major Himalayan mountains , you need a government-issued climbing permit. The mount Everest rush started after Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made it to the top in 1953. Before that, Khumbu's environmental state was far healthier. But with thousands of pairs of feet pounding its footpaths for decades, many believe that Sagarmatha needs a rest.
Global climate change alone has affected Everest's geography, as some of its glaciers have retreated as much as three miles (4.8 km) in the past 20 years. If the glaciers continue to recede, it could endanger the local Sherpas who have already experienced flooding from the melting ice
what is the climate on Everest?
The mountain was named for Sir George Everest, a British military engineer who served as surveyor general of India from 1829 to 1843, during which time the peak was surveyed. Everest was the first person to record the location and height of the mountain, then known as Peak XV. Most Nepali people refer to the mountain as Sagarmatha, meaning "Forehead in the Sky." Speakers of Tibetan languages, including the Sherpa people of northern Nepal, refer to the mountain as Chomolungma, Tibetan for "Goddess Mother of the World."
In 1954, after various figures had been rejected, the height of Mount Everest was determined as 8848 m (29,028 ft). The mountain's actual height, and the claim that Everest is the highest mountain in the world, have been disputed. But additional surveys completed in the early 1990s continued to support evidence that Everest is the highest mountain in the world. In fact, the mountain is rising a few millimeters each year due to geological forces. Global Positioning Technology (GPS) has been installed on Mount Everest for the purpose of detecting slight rates of geological uplift.
a 14-year-old boy raised by his mother and stepfather, is the protagonist in the story. Something that Peak learns towards the end of the book is “The only thing that you’ll find on the summit of Mount Everest is a divine view. The things that really matter lie far below.
a monk, helps Sun-jo and Peak climb Mount Everest. He is one of the main characters, and is Sunn-jo's grandfather. “If he agrees to something he’ll do it, but he may not be doing it for the reason you think he's doing it. And he’ll never let you know why he’s doing it.
Peak's biological father, "a rock rat", was not there for Peak or Teri in the earlier years. He is one of the best mountaineers in the world. “As you can see, Mr. Wood is a very successful businessman.
